About The Position

The Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is seeking an Inspector of Weights and Measures to inspect and test weighing and measuring devices, petroleum products, and packaged commodities. This role involves enforcing policies and procedures related to inspection activities, explaining applicable laws, and maintaining records and reports. The position is crucial for protecting and promoting the health of all San Franciscans by ensuring fair trade practices and product accuracy. The work is performed primarily at off-site locations and requires a moderate degree of physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Possession of any two (2) of the required three (3) valid County Weights and Measures Inspector Licenses issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture: Weight Verification License; Measurement Verification License; Transaction and Product Verification License.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver License.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date.
  • Knowledge of weighing and measuring devices, including their construction, maintenance, and operations.
  • Knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to weights and measures as described in the Business and Professions Code and the California Administrative Code.
  • Ability to inspect weighing and measuring devices for accuracy within established tolerance limits and for compliance with specifications and requirements.
  • Ability to use proper investigative techniques to gather facts, analyze situations, and take appropriate enforcement actions.
  • Ability to verbally communicate effectively with staff, merchants, business owners, employees, the general public, and others.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly in written format with correct grammatical form for reports, notices, and citations.
  • Ability to relate effectively to merchants, managers, employees, and the general public, including handling complaints and stressful situations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and tests weighing and measuring devices, petroleum products, and packaged commodities for labeled content and retail price verification.
  • Carries out, interprets, and enforces policies and procedures relative to inspection activities.
  • Explains applicable laws, policies, rules, and regulations to employees, businesses, and the public.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on inspection activities.
  • Investigates complaints concerning illegal weights and measures practices.
  • Conducts field tests of various weighing and measuring devices.
  • Inspects pre-packaged meats and other packaged commodities.
  • Enforces state and county laws related to weights and measures by issuing warning notices and citations.
  • Takes samples of gasoline and other petroleum products.
  • Answers questions from the general public related to weights and measures.
  • Serves as a source of information and maintains good public relations.
  • Assists with annually calibrating all field standards and on-the-job training.
  • Writes daily inspection reports and investigative reports, as required by law.
