About The Position

AECOM is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Principal Site Inspector to join its growing tunnel drilling team in Canada. This role is ideal for a professional and collaborative individual with strong technical knowledge and extensive experience in supervising Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and SEM drilling, deep shafts, underground structures, and geotechnical and structural work within large infrastructure programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Minimum of six years of relevant experience in managing the design of tunnel drilling projects for water conveyance.
  • Strong technical experience in supervising underground works and underground excavation.
  • Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or ability to obtain it within one year of employment start date.
  • Bilingualism (French and English) required for mandates outside of Quebec.

Nice To Haves

  • Over ten years of experience in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and SEM drilling, deep shafts, underground structures, and geotechnical/structural construction for large infrastructure programs (highly desirable).
  • Master's degree in Geotechnical or Structural Engineering.
  • Experience in site construction activities for underground works, including TBM and SEM/NATM drilling and support structures, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient execution aligned with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, and inspection and test plans.
  • Technical expertise in TBM and SEM/NATM tunnel drilling, shaft design, ground improvement, and deep shaft support structures.
  • Strong knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, rock mechanics, and soil behavior.
  • Proficiency in analytical and numerical methods for underground works, including 2D/3D modeling.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed technical decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (French and English) and ability to clearly present technical concepts.
  • Strong teamwork, coordination, and client-facing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily inspections and field engineering efforts, manage site-based inquiries and clarifications from draft to closeout, and review temporary works, set-outs, sequencing, and hold and monitor points.
  • Maintain comprehensive daily logs, photographic records, and concise progress reports to document site conditions and activities.
  • Verify TBM launch and reception readiness, monitor operational parameters, and oversee the quality of installations and interventions on segments.
  • Manage SEM-excavated areas and their sequencing, sprayed concrete application and testing, and inspection of lattice girders, steel reinforcement, and temporary supports while validating excavation classes.
  • Inspect and control excavation support structures, including diaphragm walls (slurry walls), secant and soldier pile walls with lagging, sheet piles, bracing and shoring systems, and ground anchors, ensuring compliance with sequencing, preloading, interlocking, and as-built traceability.
  • Implement and monitor instrumentation and monitoring systems (settlement points, prisms, inclinometers, piezometers, extensometers, load cells), interpret trends against trigger/action thresholds, and execute timely mitigation and design verification measures.
  • Apply Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) measures, including material approval, inspections, and closure of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and Site Notices (SNs). Adherence to safety and environmental controls will be paramount, including the management of work permits, task safety analyses (TSA), task hazard assessments (THA), confined space entry protocols, and noise, vibration, and dust management.
  • Proactively coordinate tasks with geotechnical, structural, MEP, utilities, survey, contractor, designer, and client teams to resolve constraints and protect project schedules and quality.
  • Collaborate closely with internal disciplines, external partners, and clients to contribute to project success.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of AECOM's tunnel drilling standards, tools, and best practices.
