About The Position

Responsible for activities involving expert inpatient coding of medical records as a mechanism for indexing clinical information used for research, utilization, appropriateness of care, compilation of statistics for hospital regional and government, and accurate reimbursement. Identifies and reports coding opportunities and recommendation for improvement. Monitors and reports trend and escalates discrepancies to management.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing inpatient coding in an acute care setting.
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
  • Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD 9-CM, ICD10-CM/PCS.
  • Knowledge of Medicare hospital and IPPS coding and reimbursement regulations.
  • Knowledge of MS-DRG classification structure.
  • Knowledge of current healthcare based technology, coding, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) practices.
  • Knowledge of coding guidelines.
  • Knowledge of revenue cycle workflows (charges/charge master, code edits, auditing, denials management, and document improvement).
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease process and minor surgical procedures.
  • Knowledge of laws, codes, rules and regulations governing area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of department and hospital safety practice and procedures.
  • Knowledge of patient rights.
  • Knowledge of age specific patient care practices.
  • Knowledge of infection control policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
  • Skill in coding and maintaining department specific quality standards.
  • Skill in meeting productivity standards as documented by the department and organization.
  • Skill in reviewing and abstracting information.
  • Skill in data collection, manipulation and retrieval.
  • Skill in reviewing and checking documents to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Skill in meeting strict productivity standards.
  • Skill in concentrating for long periods of time while dealing with distractions.
  • Skill in reporting inconsistencies and discrepancies with established standards and guidelines.
  • Skill in using 3M 360 or similar integrated encoder computer assisted coding systems.
  • Skill in using Webex.
  • Skill in running queries.
  • Skill in reviewing denials.
  • Skill in preparing technical reports.
  • Skill in paying attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Skill in handling patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties.
  • Skill in efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
