Innovation Project Leader

Stellantis•Auburn Hills, MI

About The Position

The Innovation Project Leader develops functional and dysfunctional designs for innovative batteries to meet agreed performance and safety objectives. The role assesses disruptive cell-electrochemistry technologies for automotive applications, leads cross-functional project teams and external partnerships, and develops mid- and long-term roadmaps for cell electrochemistry technologies and designs. It evaluates battery-pack performance—including thermo-electric performance and performance in stationary environments—along with cost and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), and leads projects through Technology Readiness Level (TRL) gates and milestones. The position works with technical teams, expertise networks, project stakeholders, partners, and internal facilities to synthesize design information, capitalize tools and methods, and deliver project outputs on time. Deliverables include technical and TRL assessments, design syntheses, battery-pack performance summaries, models and control laws, LCA assessments, cost analyses, requirements for external cell makers, activity reports, and partnership and facility-upgrade plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering or Electrochemistry Engineering.
  • Minimum 8 years of work experience in the battery energy storage area.
  • Knowledge of battery-pack design, electrochemistry, thermal management, battery cells, and electrical energy storage.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working in cross-functional and multicultural team environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Materials Engineering or Electrochemistry.
  • Proven experience in electrochemistry.
  • Experience with current and/or advanced cell technologies.
  • Experience providing technical guidance and direction during supplier technical reviews.
  • Proven experience in team leadership or project management.

Responsibilities

  • Develop functional and dysfunctional battery designs to achieve agreed battery-pack performance and safety objectives.
  • Assess disruptive cell-electrochemistry technologies for automotive applications from a technical-performance perspective.
  • Lead relationships with external partners, including academic institutions, startups, cell manufacturers, and material providers.
  • Coordinate relationships and human resources with advanced and core teams and internal facilities.
  • Develop partnerships and internal facility upgrade plans.
  • Build and disseminate mid- and long-term roadmaps for cell-electrochemistry technologies and designs.
  • Lead projects involving multiple teams and skill areas through TRL gates and milestones according to project plans.
  • Capitalize on and disseminate methods and models within PDT communities.
  • Summarize battery-pack performance and constraints at the project level.
  • Evaluate battery-pack thermo-electric performance, including power and addressable energy under thermal conditions.
  • Evaluate battery-pack cost, stationary-environment performance, and LCA.
  • Use battery-pack systems engineering to develop functional and dysfunctional analyses.
  • Facilitate working teams and synthesize designs across functions and disciplines.
  • Gather and synthesize information from multiple sources, manage partner relationships, and deliver project gates and outputs on time.
  • Exchange and validate results with technical teams, expertise networks, and project stakeholders.
  • Produce technical assessments and milestone reports, battery-pack design and performance summaries, models and control laws, TRL and LCA assessments, cost analyses, external cell-maker requirements, activity reports, and partnership and facility-upgrade plans.
