About The Position

The Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) supports the business operations of state agencies through a variety of services, including building management and maintenance, information technology, centralized contracting and procurement, budget and financial management, space planning and leasing, construction management, motor vehicle fleet operations, and oversight of the state retirement systems. We are looking for a person who understands the value of public service and wants to help us meet the needs of our citizens. Above all, we are looking for someone that is passionate about IT database administration and support of database users. This person needs to be an excellent communicator, meaning you can effectively make oral and written reports, presentations and prepare clear and concise documentation. You need to be capable of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with clients and matrix support teams. We need someone who can resolve complex problems in a timely manner and seeks optimum solutions. As a Senior Oracle Database Administrator supporting Michigan State Police (MSP), this team member is responsible for database structure and design, implementing and maintaining the database environment, and ensuring compliance with security and integrity needs across the database environment. The employee is responsible for understanding data architecture and design, install, configure, and upgrade database software, maintain, and implement security practices that would include reviewing tenable scans and implementing current patches and security updates. The employee will also be responsible for database backups and restorations, performance optimization/tuning and provide support to incident responses. The employee plays a key role in database administration and support, ensuring that database performance and minimize database downtime are tracked closely and that the database access and security controls are kept up to date with the current policies, procedures, and standards. The goal is to install and maintain the performance of database servers and develop processes for optimizing database security.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree with 21 semester (32 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: computer science, data processing, computer information systems, data communications, networking, systems analysis, computer programming, information assurance, IT project management or mathematics.
  • Two years of professional experience equivalent to an Information Technology Infrastructure or Programmer/Analyst P11.
  • Possession of an associate's degree with 16 semester (24 term) credits in computer science, information assurance, data processing, computer information, data communications, networking, systems analysis, computer programming, IT project management, or mathematics and two years of experience as an application programmer, computer operator, or information technology technician; or two years (4,160 hours) of experience as an Information Technology Student Assistant may be substituted for the education requirement.
  • Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and four years of experience as an application programmer, computer operator, information technology technician, or four years (8,320 hours) of experience as an Information Technology Student Assistant may be substituted for the education requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Support the application development teams and vendor supplied Software-as-a-Service efforts for MSP, including small enhancements, maintenance, and operations for new and existing MSP databases.
  • Implementing and maintaining the database environment and ensuring compliance with security and integrity needs across the database environment:
  • Assist data architecture team with database design.
  • Install, configure, and upgrade Database software.
  • Ensure all databases are current in all patches and updates.
  • Database backups and restores.
  • Database performance optimization/tuning.
  • Application/solution incident response SME.
  • Provide audit responses.
  • Liaison with support team and product owner to assist MSP and delivering database connections and data information for reporting or analytics.
  • Ensure Database Security and Integrity by following and maintaining DTMB security practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Along with maintaining awareness of industry practices and ensure appropriate access and availability to data environments.
  • Perform and Coordinate activities required to achieve application and database Go Live in production.
