About The Position

The newly created Information Technology Director position oversees, maintains and supports all technology-related aspects for the organization: infrastructure, security, end-user support, vendor relationships, asset management, and strategic planning. This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable presenting a technology roadmap to the Chief Executive Officer in the morning and troubleshooting a Citrix session or Active Directory issue in the afternoon.

Requirements

  • At least five years of progressive IT management experience, including direct accountability for infrastructure, end-user support, security, and vendor oversight.
  • Proven success as a hands-on IT leader who balances organizational priorities with active, technical involvement in daily operations and complex problem-solving.
  • Strong working knowledge of Active Directory (on-premises) and Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD, sufficient to communicate requirements to a managed services provider, review proposed changes, interpret configurations, and diagnose directory-related issues.
  • Proficiency with the broader Microsoft technology stack: Microsoft 365 administration (Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Intune) and Azure cloud services.
  • Hands-on experience supporting a Citrix virtual desktop or application environment (CVAD or similar), including end-user troubleshooting and licensing.
  • Solid command of networking fundamentals as applied in a multi-site organization: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewall policy, and wireless infrastructure.
  • Best practice implementing and managing cybersecurity controls: endpoint protection, MFA, email security, patch management, and incident response.
  • Proven success supporting a geographically distributed workforce across multiple physical locations.
  • Strong project management skills, the ability to plan, communicate, and deliver on schedule and within budget.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical topics clearly for non-technical leadership and board members.
  • Experience developing and managing an IT budget.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a non-profit, social services, healthcare, or similarly mission-driven organization.
  • Experience building or formalizing an IT function where limited structure or documentation previously existed.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA security requirements and translating them into compliant IT policies and everyday operational safeguards that ensure continuous data protection.
  • Experience with Microsoft Intune or SCCM / Configuration Manager for endpoint management.
  • Prior experience working with a managed services provider or ISP-hosted infrastructure arrangement.
  • Relevant certifications: CompTIA Security+, Network+; Microsoft MS-900, AZ-900, or Azure Administrator (AZ-104); or ITIL Foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary internal liaison to the third-party managed services provider that hosts and administers the organization's servers and Active Directory environment. While direct AD changes will be handled by the ISP, the incumbent must have sufficient working knowledge of Active Directory to communicate requirements clearly, review proposed changes, and hold the provider accountable.
  • Understand and monitor the health, performance, and availability of all hosted server and directory environments; escalate issues to the managed services provider and track resolution.
  • Participate in planning discussions for future server changes, upgrades, or migrations; provide organizational context and requirements to the managed services provider.
  • Administer and optimize the Microsoft 365 tenant across its full suite – Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Intune – managing licensing and configurations for the full organization.
  • Manage and support the Citrix virtual desktop and application environment: session performance, user access, patching, and availability across all locations.
  • Maintain the local and wide-area network infrastructure, firewalls, switching, wireless, and VPN, across all physical sites, ensuring performance and security standards are met.
  • Ensure backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans are in place, tested, and aligned with the managed services provider's responsibilities.
  • Maintain and implement the organization’s multi-year IT roadmap that aligns technology investments with the organization's mission and budget realities.
  • Serve as the primary IT advisor to the senior leadership team; prepare regular technology briefings and reports.
  • Develop and enhance IT policies, procedures, and governance standards that apply consistently across all sites.
  • Develop and manage the annual IT budget, including capital and operating expenditures.
  • Implement and maintain a cybersecurity framework (NIST CSF or CIS Controls) appropriate for a non-profit handling sensitive client and donor information.
  • Manage the Microsoft 365 security posture: Defender for Business, Conditional Access Policies, and Secure Score benchmarks.
  • Enforce and maintain multi-factor authentication across all users and systems; manage privileged access controls.
  • Conduct or coordinate regular security assessments, vulnerability scans, phishing simulations, and staff security awareness training.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable data privacy requirements, including HIPAA (if applicable), Connecticut state law, and grant or funder-specific security mandates.
  • Maintain security of the Citrix environment, including session policies and secure remote access configuration.
  • Serve as the primary internal point of accountability for the managed services provider hosting the organization's servers and Active Directory at the ISP, reviewing SLAs, directing change requests, and ensuring the provider delivers against contractual commitments.
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for the organization’s help desk vendor, evaluating performance against SLAs and ensuring the provider delivers against contractual commitments.
  • Manage all other technology vendor relationships, hardware suppliers, software publishers, telecommunications providers, and additional managed service providers, negotiating contracts and ensuring the organization receives fair value.
  • Conduct structured performance assessments across all vendors on a regular cadence; maintain documentation of SLAs, contract terms, and renewal dates.
  • Ensure all 300+ users across multiple locations receive consistent, responsive technology support regardless of site.
  • Serve as the internal escalation point for complex issues beyond the help desk vendor's scope.
  • Develop onboarding procedures, self-service resources, and staff training materials for common technology tasks.
  • Build and maintain a complete, accurate inventory of all hardware and software assets across every location.
  • Establish a lifecycle management program covering procurement, deployment, refresh, and secure retirement of devices.
  • Implement and maintain an asset tracking system with appropriate controls.
  • Plan and lead IT projects from RFP and vendor selection through implementation and staff training.
  • Manage concurrent projects with clearly communicated timelines, budgets, and stakeholder updates.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of all systems, configurations, and changes in a centralized knowledge base.
