At the Safety Branch of the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, we are responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management for the protection of the public and workers’ safety through education, outreach, inspection and enforcement, equipment registration, permits, and licenses. Our staff of over 100 employees, located throughout Nova Scotia, do this by using the Pathways to Compliance to enhance compliance of provincially regulated employees, employers and contractors through setting, promoting, verifying and enforcing requirements under various pieces of legislation. The Information Specialist is at the center of critical safety communications, serving as a trusted resource for workers, employers, and the public. In this role, you are responsible for responding to safety-related inquiries received through the 1 800 line, email, and digital forms, providing clear, accurate, and timely information. Every interaction you handle has the potential to prevent injuries, support compliance, and ultimately save lives. The Safety Branch operates 24/7, 365 days a year, responding to workplace concerns, incidents, and inquiries. As the first point of contact you will: Help individuals navigate OHS legislation, regulations, and technical safety requirements. Support the intake and response to serious incidents including injuries, fatalities, and hazardous situations. Provide clear, accurate information that directly influences workplace safety and compliance. Ensure critical information gets to Safety Officers and leadership when it matters most. This is not just an administrative role, it is a high-impact position for someone with OHS knowledge or experience who wants to apply it in a fast-paced, public-facing environment.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent related experience in OHS
  • A strong understanding of OHS legislation, regulations, and workplace safety practices
  • The ability to interpret and apply OHS requirements to real-world situations
  • A passion for promoting safe and healthy workplaces
  • Excellent communication and client service skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly
  • Strong analytical thinking and sound judgment, especially when handling urgent or sensitive matters
  • Proven ability to manage difficult conversations and de-escalate (e.g., emotional or distressed callers)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and confidentiality
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfort using multiple systems and databases to manage information effectively

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to provide service in French
  • Knowledge of the AMANDA Software system
  • Knowledge of Tableau and data analysis concepts
  • Experience in incident reporting, compliance, or regulatory environments

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary contact for OHS and Technical Safety inquiries via phone, email, and online channels
  • Interpret and communicate legislation, regulations, and safety standards to a wide range of audiences
  • Gather, assess, and document critical information to support inspections, investigations, and compliance activities
  • Respond to complex, sensitive, and sometimes urgent situations with professionalism and empathy
  • Identify immediate risks or dangerous conditions to determine response requirements and priority to escalate appropriately
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to data tracking, reporting, and trend analysis
  • Collaborate with Safety Officers and internal teams to ensure timely and effective responses
