About The Position

The Infant and Child Development Worker (ICDW) is responsible for the care of the children who visit the Bethany Hope Centre. The ICDW assists in the planning and delivery of child care programs within applicable legal, financial, and safety frameworks. This role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating age-based activities that promote social interaction and personal development, supporting childcare scheduling, and engaging with parents on child development and behavior. The ICDW ensures strict confidentiality of all information, records data, supports parent/child intakes and assessments, and role models appropriate behaviors. The position also includes providing emergency first aid, preparing healthy snacks, maintaining facility cleanliness, and collaborating with the Children’s services staff team, reporting directly to the Director of Child and Youth Development.

Requirements

  • Completed High School, plus, at least, a specialized in Early Childhood Education Assistant course, or equivalent (ie, Child and Youth Worker, full ECE).
  • Current First Aid/CPR (within 2 years).
  • Criminal Police Check, with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • More than three months prior related experience, including experience in a child care environment.
  • Attentive listening.
  • Preparing materials, crafts, program planning.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Ability to lift/move equipment and children.
  • Ability to perform room set-up.
  • Active involvement with children for most of the day.
  • Occasional computer work.
  • Cleaning the facility and putting up wall displays.
  • Ability to lift more than 20 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Early Childhood Education Assistant or registered with equivalent association (ie, Child and Youth Worker Association).
  • Certificate in Infant/Child Mental Health.
  • Trauma informed and infant child mental health and Brain Story training.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, implementation and evaluation of appropriate age based activities according to skill and learning levels that promote social interaction and personal development.
  • Support the scheduling of childcare spots and interact with parents regarding space available in the childcare.
  • Provide on-going feedback and engagement with parents on child’s development and behavior.
  • Ensure that all information about children, family, staff, visitors and volunteers are strictly confidential and recorded in the database as per policy and protocol.
  • Support parent/child intakes and child development assessments as required.
  • Role model appropriate behaviors and attitudes supporting growth and promoting change for the child and family.
  • Participate in ongoing training in the areas of trauma and infant/child mental health.
  • Provide emergency first aid and complete reports and files incident reports as required.
  • Provide and prepare healthy snacks.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness tidiness.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the staff team in Children’s services.
  • Support the volunteer and placement students in the room.
  • Helps to report monthly statistics for SAMIS.
  • May assist in purchasing arts and crafts materials when required in consultation with other ICD worker and CYD.
