Sound and efficient financial markets can ensure that resources are allocated where they are most productive, assisting job creation and spurring economic growth. IFC’s goal is to prioritize investment in the financial sector because it promotes development in all other sectors. The financial services sector is responsible for roughly 40% of IFC’s overall business in terms of volume and capital at risk. Through this business, the WBG engages in a wide range of sub-sectors including Banking on Women MSME Finance, Sustainability Finance, Insurance, Capital Markets Development, Housing Finance, Distressed Assets, and other areas, with investment, advisory, and upstream services delivered globally to IFC’s clients through IFC’s global network. Financial Services Sector – Sustainability Finance: This role will support the broader Financial Services Sector II team with a focus on Sustainability Finance and specifically Banking on Women (BOW) business. BOW plays a catalyzing role to address the finance and capacity gaps faced by women and women-owned micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in emerging markets. The advertised position is for an Industry Analyst to support the scaling of IFC’s global Financial Services Sector (FSS) department, with a particular focus on sustainability finance business line to advance the integration of sustainable finance across FIG’s investment and advisory operations. The position will be based in the Washington, DC office, with occasional travel. The selected candidate will serve the following primary roles:

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in international development, economics, finance, or a related field, with a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the financial sector, including within international financial institutions, with a track record of growing expertise in banking and non-banking financial institutions and finance-related disciplines.
  • Mastery of database management, data analysis, and data visualization is required.
  • Candidates must have a minimum of three years of hands-on experience with data analysis and visualization tools (such as Power BI), proficiency in pitchbook development using PowerPoint, and advanced working knowledge of AI and automation tools (such as Power Automate and Power Apps).
  • Strong ability to evaluate financial and operational risk, with the capacity to anticipate short- and long-term implications of decisions.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and the ability to commit to and execute decisions with confidence.
  • High degree of personal accountability, with the ability to take ownership of outcomes and hold oneself and team members responsible for results.
  • Self-motivated and well-organized, with the ability to conceptualize, plan, and manage complex deliverables with a global team under minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to interact directly and independently with senior management of clients, financial and technical partners, donors, and government officials.
  • Strong relationship management skills with a demonstrated track record of building client relationships and executing successful client engagements.
  • Skilled at working across organizational boundaries and bringing diverse perspectives together.
  • Actively shares good practices and lessons learned from across the WBG, clients, and partners.
  • A strong team player who can collaborate effectively with, mentor, and learn from colleagues at all levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; strong presentation and sales communication skills are an advantage.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple priorities, deliver high-quality work on schedule, and operate successfully within multicultural teams and across institutional boundaries.

Responsibilities

  • Pipeline and Portfolio Management: Lead the pipeline and portfolio monitoring for the FSS Department, reviewing of investment and advisory service activities, monitoring KPIs and impact indicators, and providing strategic inputs to regional teams.
  • Data Analytics and Knowledge Management: Lead pipeline tracking and portfolio monitoring for the sustainable finance team, including conducting regular reviews of investment and advisory service activities, monitoring financial KPIs and impact indicators, and providing strategic inputs to regional teams.
  • Business Case Development: Drive innovation by conducting research and developing analytical tools and persuasive communication materials that strengthen the business cases for expanding FIG’s investment portfolio in sustainable finance and Banking on Women business. This work spans sectors including insurance, climate finance, supply chain finance, housing finance, digital finance, and capital markets.
  • Innovation and Process Engineering: Maintain and continuously improve existing operational and monitoring tools, including Power BI dashboards, Power Automate workflows, and Power Apps. Collaborate with IFC and IBRD colleagues to integrate AI-driven solutions that enhance operational efficiency and support knowledge production, utilization, and transfer.
  • Project Support: Collaborate with project teams across IFC's regions to develop and deliver sustainable finance initiatives, including Banking on Women and Sustainable SMEs programs. Responsibilities include developing pitchbooks and presentation materials, conducting data collection and analysis, producing visualizations, and providing support on risk assessment, project structuring, investment processing, legal negotiations, and on-site or virtual appraisals of financial institution clients.
  • Cross-team support: Provide broader support to Financial Services Sector teams as needed, contributing to shared priorities, knowledge exchange, and operational continuity across the group.
  • Develop investment promotion materials, pitchbooks, and targeted market strategies to reach potential investors and clients and to promote IFC’s products and services globally.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of banking, financial institutions, SME dynamics, and the broader business environments in which IFC's clients operate.
  • Support the development and dissemination of knowledge management and thought leadership products.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with internal teams, banking and multilateral partners, and World Bank Group colleagues to identify and deliver specific investment opportunities.
  • Provide regular support to regional industry teams in processing and developing regionally managed projects.
  • Assist in evaluating, structuring, negotiating, and closing transactions, with emphasis on credit quality, asset performance, and development impact — including due diligence, term sheet negotiations, syndications, and board approval processes.
  • Coordinate with social, environmental, advisory, and technical assistance colleagues to maximize IFC's value to clients, address sector-specific challenges, and achieve sustainable development outcomes.
