About The Position

This role is responsible for preparing and applying protective coatings to structural steel and custom weldments. When not actively painting, this role will assist the fabrication shop team with metal preparation, fitting, grinding, and general fabrication duties to ensure production deadlines are met. Requirements

  • Minimum of 2–4 years of verifiable experience in industrial steel painting, sandblasting, and metal fabrication.
  • Demonstrated ability or willingness to cross-train and perform basic welding, grinding, and metal fitting.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex fabrication drawings, blueprints, and project specifications.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards, VOC requirements, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirators.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform abrasive sandblasting, grinding, wire brushing, and chemical wash procedures to remove rust, mill scale, and contaminants from steel surfaces.
  • Safely mix, measure, and apply various high-performance industrial coatings (epoxies, polyurethanes, zinc-rich primers, and enamels) using conventional, airless, and plural-component spray equipment, as well as brush and roller.
  • Ensure correct paint film thickness (WFT/DFT) using wet and dry mil gauges.
  • Inspect finished steel for holidays, runs, or overspray and execute necessary touch-ups.
  • Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot paint pots, spray guns, hoses, and paint booths to ensure optimal performance.
  • Grind, deburr, and polish raw steel edges, weld seams, and cutouts to prepare pieces for the paint booth.
  • Assist shop fabricators and welders with positioning, aligning, clamping, and tacking structural steel components prior to final weld-out.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging to move heavy steel beams and fabricated assemblies around the shop.
  • Operate fabrication machinery (e.g., ironworkers, saws, drill presses) and assist with general maintenance, organizing the shop floor, and managing inventory for paint and consumables.
