About The Position

Neumann Company Contractors is seeking an Industrial Painter/Blaster Foreman to join the team. This is a working foreman position requiring both hands-on industrial painting and sandblasting work and direct supervision of field employees. The Foreman is responsible for planning and leading daily operations on job sites, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all project specifications, union agreements, and regulatory requirements. This is a field-based position requiring extensive travel to project sites primarily in Illinois but can also be throughout the United States. Employees in this role must be union painters or willing to join the applicable union upon hire in accordance with project labor agreements.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in industrial painting and sandblasting of steel structures; water tank or elevated tank experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous foreman, lead, or supervisory experience in an industrial or coatings environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of surface preparation and coating standards (SSPC, NACE) and hazardous material handling regulations (EPA, OSHA, RCRA).
  • Ability to lead crews, enforce safety standards, and maintain productivity in a traveling work environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attendance, reliability, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Availability for overtime, extended hours, and multi-week travel assignments as project schedules demand.
  • Current membership in an applicable painters’ union (such as PDC30, Local 448) or willingness to join the union upon hire.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate industrial sandblasting, containment, and spray-painting equipment in accordance with company procedures and safety standards.
  • Physical capability, manual dexterity, and visual acuity to perform work at heights of up to 200 feet, within confined spaces, and in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds; climb ladders and structures (including water tanks), balance, stoop, kneel, and work on elevated surfaces.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including but not limited to hard hats, respirators, protective clothing, eye and hearing protection, and safety harnesses, for extended periods of time.
  • Willingness and ability to work in environments involving exposure to abrasive materials, dust, fumes, paint vapors, elevated noise levels, and varying weather conditions, with strict adherence to all safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Act as on-site foreman, directing and supervising painters, blasters, and laborers to ensure safe, productive, and quality work performance.
  • Assign daily work tasks, monitor progress, and adjust manpower or workflow to meet project schedules and production goals.
  • Monitor wind and weather conditions to make an informed decision on best activity to be performed each day to complete the project on time and within budget.
  • Enforce all company safety policies, union requirements, and site-specific safety plans; lead daily job safety meetings (JSAs).
  • Communicate daily progress, manpower needs, quality concerns, and safety issues with project management team.
  • Train, mentor, and coach crew members on proper work techniques, safety practices, and company expectations.
  • Complete daily reports, time tracking, and required documentation assigned.
  • Perform industrial painting and abrasive blasting, including preparation and coating of steel surfaces using approved blasting, power, and hand tools.
  • Apply coatings, primers, and paints using spray, brush, or roller techniques according to project specifications.
  • Set up, maintain, and dismantle containment systems for blasting and coating operations, ensuring environmental compliance and worker protection.
  • Safely handle, remove, and dispose of hazardous materials such as lead-based coatings in accordance with federal, state, and company regulations.
  • Inspect surfaces before and after coating applications to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
  • Mask, cover, and protect surrounding areas to prevent overspray or damage.
  • Follow project-specific coating specifications and surface preparation standards, including SSPC, NACE, and company guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain sandblasting, spray equipment, and other tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Mix, measure, and apply coatings according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Assist with rigging, material movement, and job site clean-up.
  • Erect staging, work at heights (tanks up to 200 feet) and work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear and enforce all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
