The Industrial Mechanic safely troubleshoots, inspects, maintains, and repairs a wide variety of equipment in a continuous operating environment, working indoors and outdoors, in the shop or in the field. Equipment may include piping, pumps, process fans, motors, conveyors, and chutes. The role performs machinery and equipment erection, fabrication, dismantling, overhaul, cleaning, servicing, adjustment, testing, assembly, and lubrication, as well as furnace hot repair work such as overcoating sidewalls, changing spout lips, and replacing tweels. The mechanic reads and follows blueprints, sketches, maintenance manuals, work orders, permits, and isolation procedures; performs craftsman-level gas and electric welding and burning; and develops cross-functional skills beyond traditional mechanic work. The position also provides technical advice, quality control, problem solving, troubleshooting, and repair recommendations, and participates in continuous improvement. It includes basic rigging and operation of shop equipment and vehicles or access equipment as needed. The incumbent receives verbal and written direction from supervision and completes associated paperwork and task feedback. The role has no direct reports, but may have temporary responsibility for contractor workers assigned to specific projects. The incumbent may initiate action to prevent process or quality-system nonconformity and may initiate, recommend, or provide solutions through designated channels. Work schedules depend on crew assignment and may be modified by a supervisor for emergency needs.
