About The Position

This job posting outlines two distinct roles: Industrial I/E Technician (entry-level) and Senior Industrial I/E Technician. The Industrial I/E Technician works under close supervision, assisting in the fabrication, installation, testing, and repair of electrical and instrumentation systems. This includes general power circuits, pump controls, measurement and control instrumentation, PLCs, and SCADA systems. The Senior Industrial I/E Technician performs work of significant complexity, designing, fabricating, installing, testing, and repairing these systems. They may also serve as a lead worker, directing the work of others. Both roles involve responding to emergency calls and performing corrective actions. The Senior role also includes performing scheduled maintenance, calibration, programming microprocessor-based instruments, instructing lower-level personnel, maintaining records, and overseeing contractors.

Requirements

  • Three years of education, training, and/or experience such as: completion of vocational/technical school courses in instrumentation or electronics; or a registered apprenticeship in instrumentation, measurement and control, electronics, electrical, and/or mechanical systems; and/or progressively responsible experience in the fabrication, installation, and repair of electronic instruments and electrical control systems used in an industrial facility.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Intermediate level of Windows and computer knowledge and skill.
  • Required to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and weather events as scheduled or needed in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
  • Associate's degree or a certificate of completion from a vocational/technical/military school consisting of a comprehensive program in instrumentation or electronics.
  • Ten (10) years' experience in instrumentation, measurement and control, electronics, electrical, and/or mechanical or related field which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, two (2) years of which must be within ECUA's I/E division.
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and/or computer hardware and software, including applications and/or programming.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.
  • Skill in the use of power and hand tools.
  • Skill in the use of electric, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic testing equipment.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and testing electric, electronic, and pneumatic equipment, determining problem, and completing repairs.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to write effectively using knowledge of structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Ability to detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness.
  • Knowledge of design, installation, maintenance, repair, and calibration of instrumentation, control circuitry, and mechanical systems, and electrical power distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of methods, principles, and practices of the repair of process control circuitry and various electrical, mechanical, and electronic sensing and control circuitry and devices.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions inherent in instrument/electrical work.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory.
  • Expert knowledge of troubleshooting and repair techniques.
  • Skill in reading gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Skill in conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Skill in determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Skill in installing equipment, machines, wiring, and/or programs to meet specifications.
  • Skill in controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Ability to observe equipment in operation and detect malfunctioning control circuitry, diagnose problem, and prescribe proper corrective action.

Responsibilities

  • Assists and learns how to fabricate, install, check, and repair electrical equipment and instrumentation systems.
  • Helps install, maintain, and repair industrial and electrical control systems, power distribution systems, and high and low voltage switching systems and equipment.
  • Helps install, maintain, and repair electric motors (AC and DC), motor control devices, variable frequency drives (VFD), DC drives, and magnetic drives.
  • Responds to emergency and trouble calls, locates and identifies the cause, and performs corrective actions as required.
  • Performs skilled work of average to considerable difficulty in the accomplishment of industrial electrical and/or instrumentation maintenance activities and projects.
  • Fabricates, installs, inspects, tests, adjusts, and repairs electronic, electro-mechanical, and/or pneumatic control circuits and systems.
  • Installs, maintains, and/or repairs complex electrical control systems, power distribution systems, and/or high and low voltage switching systems and equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs heavy electric motors (AC and DC), motor control devices, variable frequency drives (VFD), DC drives, and/or magnetic drives.
  • Configures microprocessor-based instruments.
  • Designs electrical equipment and instrumentation systems.
  • Performs periodic scheduled maintenance and calibration of electric and electronic equipment.
  • Tests, repairs, and calibrates various meters, gauges, controllers, and switching devices and alarm systems.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains telephones and telemetry units and systems, including radios and antennas.
  • Programs and configures microprocessor-based instruments.
  • Instructs and trains lower-level personnel on the accomplishment of more complicated tasks and projects.
  • Maintains files of drawings, schematics, manufacturer's drawings, and related manuals.
  • Oversees and inspects work performed by outside contractors.
  • Purchases necessary supplies and equipment for repairs and projects and reviews specifications as needed.
  • Maintains close liaison with suppliers, service personnel, and design personnel.
  • May be the senior technician responsible for a specified industrial area.
