About The Position

The Industrial Hygienist will drive initiatives that support MEI’s environmental policies and practices company wide. Will advise on hazardous materials such as asbestos or lead; identifies and evaluates chemical, physical, biological, and radiological controls; and offers guidance and support for spillage or leaks with appropriate notification, documentation, containment, clean-up, and/or disposal. Advise stakeholders on hazardous materials regulations and state or federal legal requirements. This is a hybrid remote position; however, overnight travel will be required to MEI locations across the country as needed for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Construction, or related field.
  • Five (5) to Seven (7) years’ experience identifying environmental areas of concern, performing job hazard analyses, or other areas of progressive responsibility.
  • Extensive background and knowledge of Industrial Hygiene may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Interpret federal codes, standards, and regulations related to Industrial Hygiene and applicable in environments adjacent to nuclear energy.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Trouble-shoot using inductive and deductive reasoning and solid investigative skills and have the ability to solve problems with others and across all levels of experience and understanding.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Registered Industrial Hygiene Professional (RIHP), or equivalent certification highly preferred.
  • Background or experience with nuclear facility regulations and knowledge of environmental remediation activities and job hazards similar to the nuclear energy industry highly preferred.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and knowledge of various equipment functions helpful.
  • Good understanding of mathematical concepts, chemistry, production / processing, and/or building / construction environments helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the investigations into industrial accidents, injuries, or hazardous materials contamination or concerns.
  • Offer hazardous condition monitoring and formulate appropriate SOPs.
  • Stay up to date on changing regulations and industrial processes; inform and educate others, as necessary.
  • Recommend, design, and implement procedures for the detection and mitigation of environmental concerns or health stressors unique to each job site or location, as well as industry-common hazards.
  • Monitor and evaluate corrective actions taken to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Participate in job walks, pre-task planning, and job hazard analyses.
  • Conduct or arrange for third party testing of air quality, noise levels, temperatures, and other environmental conditions or health stressors as necessary; ensure consistent, appropriate, and effective measures are in place for waste removal and/or disposal.
  • Coordinate with Safety team for technical standards application, personal exposure identification and monitoring, and modifications to Safety programs.
  • Inspect job sites, facilities, floors, outdoor areas, machinery / equipment, clothing / uniforms, or powered vehicles to identify and correct or eliminate potential hazards.
  • Verify subcontractor or third-party work is performed according to governmental regulations, technical specifications, and MEI / customer specific requirements.
  • Provide SME technical advice on handling environmental health related concerns, assist with policy information dissemination, and generate regular and appropriate reporting for project leadership and stakeholders.
  • Adjust, configure, or calibrate testing instrumentation as necessary; uphold data collection and collection methods integrity.
  • Travel to U.S. locations as needed; travel may involve overnight stays.
