About The Position

In our Industrial Design Internship you will support the new product development team with building, prototyping, testing, and refining concepts. You will use sketching and CAD modeling to translate design intent into tangible products for cross functional design reviews. During your time with AprilAire you will learn about the full production cycle and how to creatively implement our signature design elements around manufacturing constraints. You will also create clear documentation of completed work for internal reference and external supplier needs. Our small, yet highly productive, team will guide your involvement while providing opportunity to further develop your skillset. This is an on-site opportunity in our Sun Prairie office location just east of Madison, WI. Internship will start June 1st and run through end of August/Early September. May require limited, local travel for VOC feedback. Primarily office setting with occasional time spent in the in-house model shop.

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing Industrial Design (or similar) Degree or related field/experience.
  • Portfolio highlighting thoughtful design and problem solving is required.
  • Experience with Solidworks CAD modeling software.
  • Ability to rapidly prototype concepts and create looks like models with adequate craftsmanship. Including using basic power tools, sanders, priming and paint.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe Illustrator.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft productivity apps. (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Forms)

Nice To Haves

  • Keyshot rendering experience is preferred. Basic understanding of material, lighting and shadow set up for renders.
  • Figma knowledge is a strong plus.
  • 3D printing knowledge and materials is a plus.
  • Ability to set up prints in slicer, print and post processing.

Responsibilities

  • Support New Product Development efforts through concept generation and product refinement.
  • Interpret and apply AprilAire signature design elements into new concept creation.
  • Provide CAD models for early concept vetting. Including prepping files, 3D printing and post processing prints for reviews.
  • Assist in design system documentation including creating guideline visuals and building CMF decks.
  • Assist with preparing and documenting usability studies, followed by cross functional briefings to discuss results.
  • Participate in reoccurring design reviews with engineering to determine best design direction. Including sketches, early model prototypes, and user experience journey representations.
  • Create artwork hand off files for external supplier quote/ production.
  • Evaluate design feature tradeoffs when considering full production cycle.
  • Strongly advocate for optimum user experience and ergonomics through form development and concept validation.
