About The Position

HBK's SALT (State and Local Tax) Center of Excellence Advisory Practice helps clients navigate the complexity of sales and use tax compliance, controversy, and strategic planning. We're looking for an Indirect Tax Manager to serve as a client-facing leader — someone who can deliver high-quality advisory work while developing the next generation of SALT talent.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting
  • 5+ years of sales & use tax and gross receipts tax compliance and advisory experience
  • One or more of the following required: CMI, CPA, EA, or JD
  • Proven experience managing, mentoring, and developing staff
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • A demonstrated ability to spot advisory and consulting opportunities within existing engagements
  • A client-centric mindset and strong presentation skills
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Nice To Haves

  • Avalara experience preferred; experience with comparable tax software also welcome

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on sales and use tax matters, including nexus studies, taxability analyses, sales tax controversy matters, and reverse audits
  • Deliver proactive, high-quality compliance, advisory, and controversy services
  • Review and assist with preparation of sales tax returns, providing feedback to team members
  • Stay current on legislative and regulatory changes and advise clients on the implications for their business
  • Supervise, train, and mentor associates and senior associates on engagement responsibilities, technical skills, and deadlines
  • Support the growth of domestic and international team members as business needs evolve
  • Model strong communication, judgment, and leadership that inspires the same in others
  • Partner with Principals, Directors, and Senior Managers to identify and pursue advisory opportunities
  • Build new client relationships and expand engagements with existing clients
  • Develop and deliver subject-matter presentations and assist with proposals
  • Engage in business development through networking and community representation
  • Ensure client and team satisfaction through clear communication, deadline management, and proactive tax-saving strategies
  • Uphold the firm's culture, values, and client service principles
  • Travel to client and internal meetings as needed (~10%)
