About The Position

The Iiyika’kimaat program, which means “to try hard” in Blackfoot, provides Indigenous youth, aged 12-21 years, an opportunity to reach their full potential through culturally relevant and leadership-specific components and activities. This position is 37.5 hours a week and requires a flexible schedule including some weekends and evenings to meet youth and community needs.

Requirements

  • Excellent understanding of Indigenous clients and the multi-faceted issues they face.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultural protocols and ways of knowing.
  • Ability to articulate your connection within the Calgary and Area of Indigenous community.
  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in a related human services or social services field with three to five years recent related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience with youth development frameworks, including strength-based, trauma-informed care, stages of change, family, and natural supports frameworks.
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel, and ability to learn database systems TRAX.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities and ability to create and foster strong relationships.
  • An engaging person who loves to be part of a team supporting people as well as an ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector search and cleared Intervention Record Check.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Training.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License and Drivers Abstract.
  • A reliable vehicle, as this position requires driving to meet the needs of the youth, including transporting youth to appointments, programs, and other support related activities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement creative programming alongside the other Indigenous Initiatives staff.
  • Ensure for the safety and well-being of all children and youth in the program, including group and/or individual behavior management and support.
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities based on assigned core program area with a focus on the Circle of Courage framework, self-esteem, leadership, identity, and social skills.
  • Ensure programs reflect cultural diversity in the community and include cultural awareness components.
  • Provide appropriate cultural experiences and referral supports to Indigenous youth and their families in collaboration with Trellis Society’s Indigenous Initiatives team.
  • Train, support, supervise, and evaluate the work of the volunteers and practicum students assigned to the program.
  • Maintain specific program and member statistics, ensure client records are regularly maintained, and perform other administrative duties as required including monthly reporting of program statistics, program costs, and qualitative content.
  • Ensure all licensing and safety standards are met as per Government and CAC requirements.
  • Ensure for cleanliness of facility and van, and proper care of equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with recruitment and marketing of programs in the community, schools, on social media, and at events.
  • Support Trellis Society initiatives and events.
  • Complete other tasks required for programming.
