About The Position

The Toronto Zoo is seeking a Seasonal Indigenous Relations Communications Assistant for an 8-week duration. This role is responsible for assisting in the development of communications materials, including webpages, social media content, and other identified materials, to support the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Zoo’s mission. The ideal candidate is positive, enthusiastic, and passionate about connecting people, animals, conservation science, and traditional knowledge to fight extinction. The Toronto Zoo prioritizes animal well-being and shows respect for all wildlife.

Requirements

  • Experience with website design and/or graphic design.
  • Some experience with photography and video.
  • Interest or experience with traditional land-based knowledge and working in Indigenous communities.
  • Interest in animals, plants, and conservation issues.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to sustainable practices.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to initiate and carry out tasks/projects with minimal supervision.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
  • Ability to work weekends, shifts, and holidays as scheduled.
  • Ability to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
  • Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing.

Nice To Haves

  • Possess an unrestricted Class G driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record.
  • Lived experience as a First Nations, Inuit or Metis person.
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the re-design of the Indigenous Relations webpage, including suggestions for layout and content development.
  • Taking photos and videos, and ensuring media release forms are completed and signed.
  • Assisting with developing copy and content for social media posts on Indigenous Relations activities and promoting programs and events.
  • Assisting team members in promoting programming to guests through social media copy, sign creation, and verbal invitations.
  • Helping with event/program set up and clean up.
  • Acting as an additional guide and point of contact/support for Elders, Knowledge Sharers, and Indigenous groups visiting the Zoo.
  • Working cooperatively with all Zoo team members.
  • Gathering feedback from participants to enhance programming.
  • Working closely with the Zoo’s Strategic Communications team on webpage and social media content development.
  • Traveling to community events off Toronto Zoo premises, as required.
  • Assisting Indigenous Relations staff in webpage design and content development, including social media content.
  • Documenting programs and activities through photographs and video, ensuring media release forms are completed.
  • Communicating and coordinating regularly with staff from the Zoo’s Strategic Communications team.
  • Providing excellent customer service to guests.
  • Sharing conservation messaging.
  • Inspiring sustainability awareness and actions.
  • Following all policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Attending appropriate training as required.

Benefits

  • The rate of pay is $18.60 per hour.
