About The Position

The Independent Living Specialist supports New Yorkers experiencing homelessness through intake and assessment, counseling, advocacy, concrete services, housing placement, and follow-up. The role also includes accompanying clients to appointments, maintaining documentation and progress notes, participating in staff meetings and trainings, and providing emergency first aid or CPR when needed. The position is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday, with hours of 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Tuesday hours of 12:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Experience working with homeless people with mental illness.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
• CPR training certification or willingness to take a CPR training class.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Spanish-English bilingual ability.
• Experience with outreach, entitlements, or substance abuse services.
• CASAC credential.
• Vaccination is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct intake and assessments.
• Provide individual and group counseling.
• Provide concrete services, assistance with entitlements, and advocacy.
• Escort clients to appointments.
• Complete documentation, record keeping, and progress notes.
• Develop psychosocial and treatment plans and conduct aftercare follow-up.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings.
• Assist with housing placement.
• Provide emergency first aid or CPR assistance when needed.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
