About The Position

Independent Living Skills Trainers (ILST) provide training to people with visual impairment and their caregivers to improve their functioning in daily life activities. Areas of training include household management, personal care, and communication skills. ILST also provides outreach to the community, connections to resources, and facilitation of group activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Gerontology, Social Work, Communications, Psychology, Sociology, Rehabilitation or Related Field.
  • Experience providing direct services to people with disabilities, preferably Blindness.
  • Experience conducting home visits and managing a caseload.
  • Demonstrated skills in providing independent living skills training to individuals with disabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Effective organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of Independent Living Skills/Occupational Therapy
  • Eye Medical Knowledge
  • CPR/1st Aid certification
  • Knowledge of Low Vision Services
  • Knowledge of Adaptive low vision aids
  • Knowledge of Adjusting to blindness

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site trainings with visually impaired individuals (consumers) in their homes, community, and/or workplace to assist in maintaining their independence.
  • Train consumers in adaptive living skills such as cooking, cleaning, labeling clothes, laundry, labeling groceries, grocery shopping, medication maintenance, dealing with mail and correspondence, social media and technology.
  • Assess consumer’s functioning in areas such as vision, orientation and mobility skills, social and emotional issues, cognition, physical abilities, and personal goals.
  • Develop a service plan collaboratively with consumers, based on results of assessments, needs, and goals.
  • Monitor consumers’ progress to determine whether changes in service plan is needed.
  • Recommend appropriate adaptive aids and referrals.
  • Document as required in client management software.
  • Facilitate Low Vision Club Meetings on a monthly basis by scheduling guest speakers or creating special interest activities.
  • Provide outreach in the community to grow awareness of Lighthouse resources and available community resources.
  • Link to resources in the community for additional needs.
  • Collaborate with other rehab and Lighthouse departments as needed.

  • Travel between worksites, consumers residences and the community, as needed
  • Other Duties as assigned
