About The Position

Pump is seeking its first In-House Counsel to manage legal matters across the company, with a strong emphasis on alternative dispute resolution. This is a practical role for an individual with a litigation background who is eager to utilize their expertise within a startup setting in San Francisco. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the founders and operations team to mitigate risk, resolve disputes effectively, and establish the legal department from its inception.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active admission to the California Bar.
  • 3-8 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Prior litigation experience (either in private practice or in-house), including hands-on involvement in arbitration and other ADR proceedings.
  • Direct experience with dispute resolution related to payments, collections, or other financial matters.
  • Working knowledge of Delaware corporate law.
  • Proficiency in contract drafting, negotiation, and communication.
  • Ability to operate independently and in person within a fast-paced startup environment.

  • Previous in-house experience at an early-stage startup.
  • Prior experience in establishing legal processes from the ground up.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as in-house counsel for a rapidly expanding startup, providing advice on ongoing legal requirements.
  • Oversee and resolve business disputes, offering practical business advice.
  • Manage arbitration proceedings and other Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes from initiation to completion.
  • Assess litigation risks and make informed decisions regarding the optimal course of action for each case.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts and agreements with vendors, partners, and customers.
  • Advise leadership on regulatory and compliance issues pertinent to the payments industry.
  • Manage relationships with outside counsel and support corporate governance initiatives.
