About The Position

The primary responsibility of this position is to process and integrate customer data, assisting with the movement of goods between international borders. This role serves as the customer service liaison between the company and the customer(s), resolving problems such as billing and shipment tracking, and handling customer concerns while building relationships. The Import Specialist I processes customs and PGA entries for clearance of goods into the United States, requiring experience specific to client submission requirements and clearance of specific commodities. The role involves opening files, entering notes, information, and document requests in corporate systems, reviewing commercial invoices, and verifying shipment details like weight, volume, and foreign currency. Communication with various internal and external parties, including employees, suppliers, service providers, U.S. government agencies, offices, departments, teams, carriers, and vendors, is crucial. Ensuring compliance with U.S. government regulatory agencies (FDA, EPA, USFWS, etc.) and coordinating shipping details with forwarders, steamship lines, airlines, and agents are key functions. The position also involves coordinating shipments from various points to customer destinations, coordinating pick-ups, and invoicing files. Staying updated on regulations, laws, guidelines, and Deringer requirements is essential, acting as a resource to clients. The role handles accounting processes accurately and promptly, ensures professional email and telephone communication, and manages confidential information. The Import Specialist I may provide instructions to colleagues and is expected to recommend process improvements. Other duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

  • Highschool diploma/GED
  • 1+ year(s) of previous customs Northern Border brokerage experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the customer service liaison between the company and the customer(s)
  • Resolves problems (i.e. billing, tracking shipments) and handles customer concerns. Builds relationships with customers
  • Processes customs and PGA (Participating Government Agency) entries for clearance of goods into the United States
  • Has experience specific to client submission requirements and clearance of specific commodities
  • Opens files, enters notes, information and document requests in corporate systems
  • Reviews commercial invoice for proper information
  • Reviews documentation or issues documents to meet government regulations and carrier regulations
  • Convert and verify shipment weight, volume and foreign currency
  • Sends information/document requests to company's employees, suppliers, service providers and/or U.S. government agencies as needed
  • Communicates with specific offices, departments, and teams on all issues affecting customs brokerage
  • Ensures compliance with regards to U.S. government regulatory agencies such as FDA, EPA, USFWS, etc.
  • Coordinates shipping details with U.S. forwarders, steamship lines, airlines, agents, etc.
  • Maintains communication with customers, carriers and vendors
  • Coordinates shipments from airline, ocean piers and CFS (Container Freight Station) to customer/consignee destination
  • Coordinates pick-ups and invoices files
  • Stays up-to-date on regulations, laws, guidelines and Deringer requirements. Acts as a resource to internal and external clients.
  • Handles accounting processes accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ensures email and telephone calls are promptly and professionally answered
  • Handles confidential information. May give instruction to colleagues and is expected to make recommendations to improve processes and the functioning of the department and/or company
