The Minnesota Star Tribune is seeking an ambitious Immigration Reporter to cover immigration and the communities reshaping Minnesota. Based regularly at the organization’s downtown Minneapolis headquarters, the reporter will cover the real-world effects of decisions made by federal, state and local governments on Minnesota families, workplaces, schools and communities. The reporter will break news as immigration policy and enforcement change and produce distinctive enterprise and accountability journalism that helps readers understand the broader forces and consequences. The role involves building authoritative sources among immigrant communities and community leaders, government officials, law enforcement, advocates, attorneys, employers and others. Coverage should examine immigration’s effects on Minnesota’s workforce, economy, cities and institutions, as well as the local consequences of federal policy and political conflict. Success will be measured by meaningful news breaks, deep and diverse sourcing, ambitious original enterprise journalism, and making the Star Tribune an essential source for understanding immigration in Minnesota. The reporter will collaborate with visual journalists and newsroom colleagues, use audience insights to find unanswered questions and reach new readers, and employ formats such as video, audio, newsletters and live coverage when they strengthen the journalism. The position requires regular work from the downtown Minneapolis headquarters. The role requires current U.S. work authorization without employment-visa sponsorship.
