About The Position

The Minnesota Star Tribune seeks an ambitious Immigration Reporter to lead coverage of immigration and the communities reshaping Minnesota. Based regularly at the organization’s downtown Minneapolis headquarters, the reporter will cover breaking developments in immigration policy and enforcement while producing distinctive enterprise and accountability journalism about their effects on Minnesota families, workplaces, schools, and communities. The reporter will develop authoritative sources among immigrant communities and community leaders, government officials, advocates, attorneys, employers, law enforcement, and other institutions. Coverage should explain how immigration is changing Minnesota, examine larger forces such as effects on the workforce and economy, and connect national policy developments to their consequences in the state. The position also uses audience insights to identify coverage opportunities and may involve formats such as video, audio, newsletters, and live coverage when they strengthen the journalism. The Minnesota Star Tribune is a modern media organization with a 159-year legacy and seven Pulitzer Prizes. It describes its mission as building a better Minnesota by connecting people with ideas and stories that strengthen communities. The role is an A-scale position covered by the contract of the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild. The annual pay range is $62,662.08–$87,638.72; compensation depends on qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside the stated range. Applicants should submit a resume, work samples, and a memo describing how they would build sources, break news, develop enterprise stories, and make the Star Tribune an essential destination for immigration coverage. The employer is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas; applicants must already be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
