Illustrator, Product (Contract)

Sunday Robotics•Redwood City, CA
•$35 - $45

About The Position

Sunday is seeking a product illustrator to create storyboards for Memo, its home robot, as it moves from beta toward its first commercial release. The illustrator will help product, machine learning, hardware, robot software, and design teams agree on how Memo behaves in real homes by turning written user journeys into clear, sequential frames that can be reviewed in engineering and product meetings. This is a scoped contract engagement of roughly six weeks, starting the week of November 9, with a possible extension into customer-facing illustration work as R1 approaches launch. The work is based in Redwood City or San Francisco, California, with in-person attendance for kickoff and reviews at the Redwood City office. Other work is asynchronous, with one 30-minute sync per week. Compensation is $35–$45 per hour, depending on experience.

Requirements

  • Portfolio must include at least one multi-frame sequence, such as a storyboard, comic page, animatic, or explainer, where the story reads without captions.
  • Confident figure drawing and interior perspective skills.
  • Ability to maintain consistent product proportions across frames using photo references.
  • Ability to produce a first pass of a full journey in a day or two and revise within the same week.
  • Clear, prompt communication in an asynchronous, Pacific-time workflow.
  • Willingness to sign an NDA and work-for-hire agreement; Sunday owns the output.

Nice To Haves

  • Storyboard or concept art experience for consumer hardware, appliances, vehicles, or robots.
  • UX storyboarding or customer-journey illustration experience for a product team.
  • Familiarity with Figma or FigJam for placing frames into flows.
  • Strong interest in robotics or smart home products.

Responsibilities

  • Translate 4–6 written user journeys into illustrated storyboards of 6–10 frames each, totaling roughly 40–60 frames, with revisions per journey.
  • Draw Memo, people, and home interiors such as bedrooms, hallways, and laundry areas, using reference photos of the robot.
  • Create loose, clean black-and-white line art with accent color markings, optimized for explaining ideas.
  • Deliver frames as PNG or PDF files sized for slides, along with editable source files, to the product team's shared Notion page.
  • Incorporate feedback from product, design, and robot software reviewers and turn revisions around quickly.
  • Flag ambiguities or physically implausible details in written journeys before illustrating them.
