About The Position

We are supporting a long-term client project in the Houston area seeking a Solutions Engineer experienced in IBM i (iSeries) environments. This is a senior systems administration role ideal for someone who has moved on from programming but still understands it well enough to support developers, manage change control, and automate processes with CL and SQL. The position focuses on system administration, upgrades, integrations, and support across IBM i and connected platforms such as Windows, Linux, Oracle, MS SQL, and Python. Candidates should bring solid experience with IBM i operations, high availability (PowerHA), and modernization tools.

Requirements

  • IBM i (iSeries) system administration and support (V7R3 or later).
  • CL expertise required; basic SQL scripting for automation.
  • Understanding of RPG and application structure to support developers (no programming expected).
  • Experience with PowerHA Replication, IBM Operations Navigator, and BRMS.
  • Experience with Aldon or ARCAD for change management.
  • Strong grasp of system performance, security, and high availability concepts.
  • Integration knowledge across Windows, Linux, Oracle, MS SQL, Python environments.
  • 7–10 years of experience supporting IBM i systems.
  • Prior background in development (RPG, CL, SQL) strongly preferred — but focus should now be on systems engineering and administration.
  • Experience with OS upgrades, vendor updates, and system integrations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • BCD tools (Nexus Portal, Presto, WebSmart) a plus.
  • Open-source familiarity (Java, PGP) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and support IBM i systems, processes, and integrations with other enterprise platforms.
  • Manage operating system and software vendor upgrades.
  • Support developers by maintaining stable environments, enforcing change control, and troubleshooting application-level issues.
  • Develop and maintain automated solutions and scripts using CL and SQL.
  • Ensure adherence to IT governance, audit, and compliance standards (SOX).
  • Provide ongoing system enhancements, tuning, and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, development, and business teams to coordinate system changes.
  • Maintain documentation, backup procedures, and change logs.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and assist during critical upgrades or recovery events.
