About The Position

The Instrumentation & Electrical Engineer is responsible for performing complete designs for complex electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments. The role requires extensive progressive experience and the application of advanced engineering techniques and analysis. Work is performed under general supervision in Hargrove’s Pasadena office (77034). The engineer develops and checks designs, calculations, specifications, drawings, cost estimates, schedules, and material take-offs for electrical and instrumentation work on process and manufacturing projects. The position may serve as discipline lead for small- to mid-sized projects, provide technical guidance to less experienced staff, and coordinate engineering activities with project teams, other disciplines, vendors, and construction personnel. The role also includes fieldwork and startup support, as well as leadership to help ensure work is completed within scope, schedule, and budget.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • At least 6 years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
  • Knowledge and application of the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Ability to perform lighting-level and voltage-drop calculations; size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection; route conduit and cable tray; calculate tray and conduit fill; and determine motor control center and load center unit substation loading.
  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details for construction bulk materials and equipment.
  • Ability to create accurate electrical installation documents using vendor equipment drawings.
  • Ability to develop equipment specifications for motor control centers, variable frequency drives, induction and synchronous motors, load center unit substations, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of schedule constraints and information requirements for producing electrical deliverables.
  • Ability to produce 15kV power system single-line diagrams and familiarity with 15kV power system equipment and installation techniques above and below ground.
  • Ability to develop specifications for 15kV/5kV equipment, including switchgear, load break switches, and motor control centers, and perform calculations for short-circuit and overcurrent protective device ratings.
  • Ability to develop electrical installation specifications, estimate task completion, determine construction material quantities, and develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and controls standards, including ISA.
  • Ability to act as discipline engineer of record on projects requiring professional engineering certification.
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation, or both.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
  • Programming experience with PLC, HMI, and/or DCS equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Use department design and drafting standards and become familiar with project scopes, specifications, and design criteria.
  • Recognize and promptly communicate scope and design changes.
  • Provide on-site assistance during startup and perform fieldwork to gather data, check tie-ins, and support construction.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel and assist the drafting group with routine layout and detailing problems.
  • Coordinate work activities with staff members, discipline leads, and design leaders from other disciplines.
  • Perform discipline lead duties on small- to mid-sized projects.
  • Produce estimate-level designs and material take-offs appropriate to the estimate being performed.
  • Prepare detailed design calculations and sketches for materials of construction in an organized format suitable for checking, drawing development, and deliverables.
  • Produce 15kV/5kV equipment specifications and electrical installation specifications.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine efficient engineering solutions.
  • Produce installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, and grounding, lighting, power, and instrumentation plans.
  • Develop designs that use construction materials efficiently, are easy to construct, and meet client expectations.
  • Check other engineers’ calculations for accuracy and conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria, and good engineering practice.
  • Provide sketches and details needed to complete engineering drawings.
  • Advise senior engineers about identified design or scope changes.
  • Help assemble scopes, drawings, and specifications into packages for electrical/instrumentation procurement inquiries or subcontract pricing.
  • Review vendor drawings and drawings from other disciplines for electrical/instrumentation input.
  • Develop construction specifications and review fabrication drawings and construction submittals for conformance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Apply discipline-specific methods, practices, and techniques for engineering, designing, and constructing process and manufacturing projects.
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis to complex designs.
  • Estimate and schedule professional service hours and assess the progress and quality of electrical/instrumentation work.
  • Identify work-sharing packages for interoffice execution support and lead communication and execution within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develop construction cost estimates, engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for small projects or areas of larger projects.
  • Contribute to P&IDs with respect to measurement and control; develop control narratives; specify process instrumentation and develop installation details.
  • Size control valves using appropriate software and develop specifications and data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, control systems, and actuated valves.
