About The Position

Clean Harbors is seeking a Senior I&E Control Specialist to support control systems, including DCS, PLC, and SIS, at its Deer Park Incineration Site in Texas or Utah. The role delivers, maintains, and upgrades control systems to meet production requirements, fulfill functionality and safety obligations, and maximize system capability. It leads system migrations and lifecycle processes, oversees maintenance recommendations for installed equipment, and coordinates concepts with production. The position owns the reliability, availability, and performance of control systems and related operational technology infrastructure across assigned sites. It provides technical leadership for automation lifecycle management, control-system engineering, cybersecurity, instrumentation reliability, functional safety, capital projects, outages, commissioning, and continuous improvement. Approximately 25% travel is expected, including monthly Aragonite support and planned outages at other facilities, with additional travel as business needs require.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of progressive control-system experience in chemical, refining, hazardous-waste, manufacturing, or other continuous-process industries.
  • Hands-on experience with ABB 800xA and INFI 90/Symphony systems, including maintenance, programming, troubleshooting, commissioning, startup, and lifecycle support.
  • Strong knowledge of control-system engineering fundamentals, including P&IDs, loop drawings, electrical and control-system drawings, control narratives, ladder logic, function-block logic, cause-and-effect documentation, and process-control strategies.
  • Experience with industrial networking, virtualization, servers, workstations, process-control networks, backups, cybersecurity fundamentals, and OT infrastructure management.
  • Ability to work independently, lead technical initiatives, support outages and on-call requirements, and coordinate across multiple disciplines.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 25% to support regional facilities.
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical, chemical, controls, automation, instrumentation, or a related engineering discipline is preferred; equivalent industrial automation experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • ABB experience combined with either Emerson DeltaV or Rockwell Automation experience; preference is given to ABB plus DeltaV or ABB plus Rockwell ControlLogix/FactoryTalk expertise.
  • ABB, Emerson, or Rockwell automation training or certifications.
  • Experience with industrial networking standards, virtualization platforms, and control-system infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting SIS lifecycle management, functional safety programs, alarm management, and OT cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Knowledge of recognized standards and guidance such as ISA/IEC 62443, NIST, and CISA.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safety, environmental compliance, and management-of-change activities for automation and control-system modifications.
  • Own the reliability, availability, and performance of DCS, PLC, SIS, HMI, historian, virtualization, servers, workstations, and process-control network infrastructure across assigned sites.
  • Monitor system health, execute preventive-maintenance strategies, and resolve issues proactively to minimize downtime and operational risk.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize control strategies, logic, alarms, interlocks, graphics, sequencing, loop tuning, and advanced process-control applications.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support for control systems, OT networks, instrumentation, hardware, software, and cybersecurity-related issues.
  • Support instrumentation reliability, commissioning, calibration, SIS lifecycle activities, proof testing, and functional safety programs with site I&E teams.
  • Lead automation lifecycle management, including technology roadmaps, obsolescence planning, migrations, software upgrades, cybersecurity initiatives, and long-term capital planning.
  • Manage control-system assets, critical spares, vendor relationships, service agreements, and total cost of ownership.
  • Maintain secure OT infrastructure, including backups, disaster recovery, remote access, patch management, network administration, and cybersecurity compliance.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including P&IDs, loop drawings, control narratives, logic records, I/O databases, network diagrams, and system architecture documents.
  • Lead root-cause analyses and continuous-improvement initiatives to improve reliability, safety, and operational performance.
  • Support capital projects, outages, turnarounds, FAT/SAT testing, commissioning, startup, and contractor/vendor management.
  • Drive standardization, best practices, performance metrics, dashboards, and configuration quality across supported facilities.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, training, regional support, and on-call assistance as required.
  • Support regional facilities through travel, including monthly Aragonite visits and planned outages at Kimball, El Dorado, and Sarnia; travel may also be required for emergencies, projects, commissioning, training, migrations, vendor activities, or other business priorities.
