About The Position

The Heavyweight Torpedo (HWT) Functional Team Lead serves as the technical lead and team facilitator for the HWT functional area within the AN/BYG-1 Payload Control System (PCS). This position combines hands-on systems engineering with day-to-day leadership of a cross-discipline development team delivering torpedo weapon control capabilities for U.S. Navy submarine combat systems. The role requires the ability to manage requirements, design, defect tracking, and test activities across the full software development lifecycle while leading the team within an Agile framework. The ideal candidate brings a strong professional curiosity about how weapon systems work — someone who will dig into torpedo interface specifications, ask probing questions about operational scenarios, and develop a deep technical understanding of HWT command and control. This role is the program’s subject matter expert for heavyweight torpedo functionality within PCS, and we are looking for someone who will take ownership of that domain: learning the weapon interfaces, understanding the operational context, and becoming the person the team and the customer turn to for authoritative answers on HWT capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, or a related Science, Engineering or Mathematics field, plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree, plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Department of Defense Secret security clearance is obtainable within a reasonable amount of time after hire.
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with submarine combat control systems, weapon control systems, or torpedo systems.
  • Familiarity with weapon interface specifications and integration.
  • Knowledge of DoD software development and documentation standards (e.g., MIL-STD-498).
  • Experience leading or participating in technical review boards or configuration control boards.
  • Familiarity with JIRA or equivalent defect and task tracking tools.
  • Understanding of system safety processes (e.g., MIL-STD-882E) as they relate to weapon control software.
  • Experience with formal government acceptance testing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a cross-discipline functional team through Agile sprint execution, including Scrum facilitation, backlog management, and sprint planning.
  • Chair the functional-level technical review board for the HWT area, coordinating with both contractor and government representatives.
  • Assign, prioritize, and track work items across the team; ensure engineers are executing systems engineering tasks on schedule.
  • Report development status and escalate blockers to program leadership.
  • Participate in program-level planning, retrospectives, and cross-functional coordination meetings.
  • Author and maintain feature-level design documentation, including user stories, acceptance criteria, and definition of done.
  • Develop and maintain system and software requirements in a requirements management tool.
  • Ensure test procedures are developed, reviewed, and updated to reflect current requirements and design.
  • Stay current on active defects and change requests within the HWT area to maintain full awareness of the functional area’s technical state.
  • Participate in design decisions for new weapon capabilities, including interface definition, requirements analysis, and prototyping.
  • Coordinate with program safety engineering on safety impact assessments for HWT-related changes.
  • Ensure all engineering products — requirements, design, verification procedures, and test procedures — receive appropriate technical review before release.
  • Interface with government technical direction agents, test organizations, and other combat system subsystem teams.
  • Distribute technical artifacts for external stakeholder review and adjudicate feedback.

Benefits

  • An exciting career path with opportunities for continuous learning and development.
  • Research oriented work, alongside award winning teams developing practical solutions for our nation’s security
  • Flexible schedules with every other Friday off work, if desired (9/80 schedule)
  • Competitive benefits, including 401k matching, flex time off, paid parental leave, healthcare benefits, health & wellness programs, employee resource and social groups, and more
