About The Position

This position supports the mission of the Office of the Military at the Battle Born Youth Challenge Academy by helping maintain a safe, comfortable, and fully operational environment for youth participants and staff in the scenic Carlin, Nevada area. The incumbent performs skilled installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) systems and equipment. Responsibilities include conducting preventive maintenance on furnaces, chillers, air handlers, refrigeration units, and related components such as motors, pumps, fans, and control systems; inspecting equipment to ensure proper operation; monitoring system performance; maintaining occupant comfort; and responding promptly to maintenance emergencies. The position diagnoses equipment malfunctions, repairs and modifies HVACR systems by replacing pipes, valves, controls, and electrical components using brazing, soldering, pipefitting, and electrical repair techniques; repairs burner assemblies; recovers and recharges refrigerants; and tests system functionality using specialized tools and diagnostic instruments. The incumbent also installs new equipment and components, including thermostats and insulation, to improve system performance and energy efficiency. In support of the Academy's mission, the position serves as a positive role model by mentoring youth participants, sharing knowledge of HVACR systems, and fostering practical skill development. Performs related duties as assigned to support the continued success of the Youth Challenge Program and maintain a safe, clean, and efficient campus.

Requirements

Completion of a recognized HVACR apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level experience in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment; OR one year of experience as a HVACR Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to estimate material and labor needed to complete a job.
Ability to secure technical advice and diagnose system failures.
Ability to design system modifications and installation.

Responsibilities

Performs preventive maintenance on various equipment related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, fuel and combustion systems, forced air furnaces, radiant heaters, chillers, air handlers, window air conditioning units, evaporative coolers and refrigeration units.
Maintains auxiliary equipment such as motors, pumps, fans, pipe systems, compressors, humidifiers, condensers and pneumatic and electronic control units.
Adheres to established maintenance schedules to replace filters, lubricate motors and fans, replace belts, conduct chemical analysis and add correct proportion of treatment chemicals, and cleaning other mechanical equipment located throughout a facility.
Inspects equipment for proper functioning; checks meters, gauges and other instruments; inspects occupied areas for comfort; adjusts safety and limit controls; logs information related to temperatures, pressures, fuel consumption, water level, time and date, and responds to emergencies such as utility and equipment failure.
Troubleshoots electrical circuits associated with heating, air conditioning and refrigeration including tracing dead circuits, rewiring circuits, repairing or replacing electrical components such as starters, contactors, relays and control units.
Makes parts and material purchases and maintains inventories according to departmental policies and State regulations.
Prepares and maintains records related to work activities.
Stores, handles and disposes of coolants and other chemicals in accordance with established policies and regulatory requirements.
