About The Position

The City of Dallas is seeking an HVAC Technician II to install, maintain, and repair refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment to provide a comfortable climate in city facilities. This role involves troubleshooting, calibrating, repairing, and installing commercial and residential HVAC or refrigeration equipment. The technician will perform mechanical labor, repair, and maintenance work, troubleshoot electrical components and pneumatic controls, and conduct routine preventive maintenance. Additionally, the role includes training apprentice mechanics, responding to temperature adjustment requests, maintaining work records, and performing other trades work as needed. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Five (5) years of experience in air conditioning, heating and/or refrigeration repair which included at least two (2) years working with five (5) ton systems and above.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Current universal level Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refrigeration certification.
  • Knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, equipment, and repair tools.
  • Ability to operate hand and portable power tools used in the installation and repair of HVAC systems.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend technical descriptions and plans.
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical codes related to HVAC installation and repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Must pass Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check.

Responsibilities

  • Performs mechanical labor, repair, and maintenance work for City HVAC equipment and related systems; performs mechanical, technical, and general manual labor to ensure safe and comfortable environment for City buildings and structures.
  • Troubleshoots, evaluates, and checks electrical components and pneumatic controls on HVAC refrigeration equipment to assist experienced mechanics in making repairs; identifies concerns, determines repair, and ensures quality work completion.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment to maintain service level in city buildings; checks drain lines, clears pipes, and makes necessary repairs; recovers refrigerant in compliance with federal regulations; repairs and replaces electric motors and starters.
  • Installs and repairs small electric motors used in forced air systems; installs and repairs drinking fountains, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, etc.; provides mechanical help and insight to address malfunctioning components.
  • Trains apprentice mechanics and trades helpers to ensure repair and maintenance of HVAC equipment is performed in a safe and efficient manner; responds to "hot and cold calls" to adjust building temperature for tenants.
  • Maintains records of work orders, material requests, time sheets, etc. to document work progress; monitors supplies and equipment, makes purchases, and works with various individuals to determine needs.
  • Performs any and all other trades work as needed or assigned.
