About The Position

Functions as a working supervisor over HVAC Technicians; performs skilled installation, repair and preventive maintenance on air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating equipment; assists the HVAC Superintendent. Reports to HVAC Superintendent.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus completion of 12 to 18 months formal training in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities).
  • A minimum of four years skilled HVAC installation, repair and troubleshooting.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license with safe driving record.
  • Must possess current Universal Certification if position requires servicing of all types of refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of HVAC technology
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety practices
  • Skill in interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to transmit work directives, to exchange information about needed repairs)
  • Skill in repair and maintenance of air conditioning and heating units and systems
  • Skill in use and care of hand and power tools and equipment
  • Skill in soldering
  • Ability to diagnose problems and take appropriate actions
  • Ability to train and provide effective work direction to other employees
  • Ability to manage time effectively and set priorities
  • Ability to carry out or assist in implementing changes
  • Ability to interpret and apply blueprints and schematic diagrams
  • Ability to understand a variety of technical manuals

  • Work in high places, tunnels, and crawl spaces
  • May require ability to repair and maintain absorption refrigeration chillers and absorption systems

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a working supervisor over HVAC Technicians and other classified, temporary or student employees engaged in HVAC activities and assists the HVAC Superintendent.
  • Trains and instructs employees on proper work procedures and policies.
  • Communicates and enforces policies and procedures; resolves problems; addresses employee concerns and complaints.
  • Assigns and monitors work activities.
  • Coordinates work flow and schedule to ensure deadlines are met, priorities are recognized, and policies/procedures are followed.
  • Participates in the interviewing and selection of job applicants and the performance evaluation of assigned employees; may recommend personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline, layoff/recall).
  • Repairs air conditioning and heating units and systems, refrigeration systems, pneumatic controls, pumps, fans, and motors; periodically overhauls air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Installs air conditioning (both window and central systems) and heating units; installs piping, pipe cover insulation, pumps, motors, and refrigeration systems.
  • Periodically inspects, tests, and diagnoses air conditioning, refrigeration and heating systems, performing preventive maintenance such as: cleaning or changing filters, lubricating motors, tightening belts in order to ensure serviceable condition of the systems; checking for needed repairs and compliance with technical orders, blueprints, specifications, handbooks and established procedures.
  • Drives vehicle to pick up and deliver personnel and materials.
  • Assists with monitoring inventory; initiates paperwork to purchase materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Performs designated functions of HVAC Superintendent in his/her absence.
  • Performs related duties as required.
