About The Position

This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, replacing, and installing HVAC systems and associated equipment. This includes fan coil units, large air handlers, hydronic systems, direct expansion (Dx) heating and cooling systems, and air filtration equipment. The role also involves maintaining components for chilled water, hydronic heating, and domestic cold-water systems, as well as pneumatic and direct digital control systems. Additionally, the HVAC Mechanic will assist with managing energy efficiency, building optimization, and general administrative functions such as processing work orders, recording work performed, and procuring quotes. The position also supports various facility initiatives and projects, including reviewing plans, attending walkthroughs, and advising on construction and renovation projects. Inventory management, general cleaning, and equipment maintenance are also key responsibilities. The role may involve operating state vehicles and serving as an on-site team lead.

Requirements

  • Completion of an approved heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems apprenticeship program; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of relevant experience.
  • Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Six (6) years of experience and general working knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of Automated Logic controllers, Belimo actuators and valves.
  • Working knowledge of Florida state building codes and other relevant codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of Mitsubishi VRF systems.
  • Knowledge of centrifugal chillers.
  • Knowledge of cooling towers.
  • Basic knowledge of steam, chilled water, and hydronic heating systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computers and basic software applications (e.g. work order management systems, Microsoft Office products (e.g. Project, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)).
  • Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to communicate with various levels of staff.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, professionalism, dependability, and timeliness.
  • Demonstrated customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform stick, MIG, and TIG welding.
  • Ability to braze copper tubing.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, replace, and install HVAC systems and associated equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, replace, and install fan coil units and large air handlers including outside air units and their associated components and controls.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC equipment, hydronic systems, and associated equipment.
  • Remove, transport, and install window air conditioning units and refrigerators up to 50 lbs.
  • Maintain hydronic based heating and cooling systems (with associated components); compliance, inspection, installation, maintenance and operation of hydronic based systems include: centrifugal chillers, fan coil units, outdoor supply air units, steam to liquid heat exchangers, heating hot water pumps, chilled water pumps, domestic water pumps.
  • Assist with management of domestic water supply systems.
  • Maintain direct expansion (Dx) heating and cooling systems (with associated components): Split Dx systems from 1-20 tons, CRAC units, VRF systems (variable refrigerant flow), and mini-split systems, and water source heat pumps, and cooling towers.
  • Maintain and replace air filtration equipment, devices, and associated components.
  • Maintain, repair, replace, and install components for chilled water, hydronic heating, and domestic cold-water systems such as pumps, motors, variable frequency drives, heat exchangers, valves, and steel and copper piping; Maintain prescribed level of chemical treatment in closed loop systems.
  • Maintain, repair, replace, and install pneumatic and direct digital control systems and their associated components; View and edit parameters for web-based building automation system.
  • Assist with management of energy efficiency and building optimization through management of pneumatic and digital building automation and control systems programming, scheduling, and communication.
  • Input and process work order requests utilizing web-based work order management system.
  • Record detailed descriptions of work performed and notate preventative maintenance information.
  • Monitor building automation systems.
  • Procure quotes from outside vendors and contractors, as needed.
  • Assist with training, continuing education, and guidance for staff on position expectations, safe use of equipment; ensure staff follow prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Review plans and assist with creating recommendations for HVAC systems on capital and minor construction projects specific to self-performed work; ensure proper installation management after design and review.
  • Attend commissioning or other walkthroughs with vendors and contractors.
  • Advise on HVAC construction and renovation projects meet environmental, health, and security standards, and comply with government regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of materials, supplies, tools and/or equipment; ensure organized workstations and storage closets with necessary materials as directed.
  • Perform general cleaning duties after the completion of maintenance tasks within buildings or properties.
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment and keep parts and supplies in order.
  • Repair equipment as needed.
  • Operates state vehicles.
  • Serve as on-site team lead ensuring proper task completion.
