About The Position

This entry-level HVAC Mechanic position involves working alongside higher-level HVAC Mechanics to perform general preventative and minor corrective maintenance on electronic and mechanical components. Responsibilities include installation of HVAC ductwork, refrigerant lines, and electrical connections, as well as the installation and recycling of refrigerants. The role also includes assisting with the maintenance, repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including cold rooms, with higher-level support. The position requires on-the-job training to learn campus buildings, tools, equipment, and materials, and to complete NCCER Core training. Maintenance data must be entered via the work order system. Support services to other trades may be required, and parts will be obtained from Central Stores. The mechanic will also be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the shop, work areas, and personal equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent).
  • One year of appropriate experience.
  • Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
  • Valid Florida driver license.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Recovery TYPE ll Certification (within 6 months post hire).
  • Ability to follow established safety practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrable ability to recognize the proper materials/equipment needed for a specific job and make necessary changes.
  • Demonstrable ability to read a service request.
  • Ability to drive or walk to customer/trouble locations.
  • Ability to move or lift weights, such as ladders, tools, and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and similar places.
  • Ability to wear appropriate safety equipment.
  • Ability to climb.
  • Ability to reach above shoulder frequently.
  • Ability to kneel.
  • Ability to bend repeatedly.
  • Ability to work in confined area that may contain animals.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrable skills necessary to solder refrigerant and water piping/tubing.
  • Demonstrable skills necessary to recover refrigerant.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general preventative and minor corrective maintenance with oversight.
  • Install HVAC ductwork, including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.
  • Install or repair refrigerant lines.
  • Install and recycle CFC or HCFC refrigerants.
  • Install or repair electrical connections to HVAC components.
  • Assist with and maintain, repair, replace, and preventatively maintain HVAC equipment, refrigeration equipment, and cold rooms with higher-level support.
  • Complete on-the-job training (OJT).
  • Learn campus buildings by names and numbers.
  • Learn tools, equipment, and materials used in the trade.
  • Complete NCCER Core.
  • Enter maintenance data via the work order system for work requests (WR) and time.
  • Provide support services to other trades as may be required.
  • Obtain parts from Centrals Stores for assigned WR.
  • Clean and maintain shop, work areas, and personal equipment.
