About The Position

The Department of Facilities Services at Tufts University is responsible for the efficient and cost-effective operations, maintenance, and management of all Tufts University facilities, encompassing approximately 5 million square feet of space across three campuses. Services include facility maintenance, capital maintenance, IT systems for operations, energy and utilities, recycling, event services, residential facilities, grounds maintenance, and facility condition assessment. Facilities Services plays a critical role in managing a significant annual investment in deferred maintenance and coordinates closely with public health and safety, campus planning, and design and construction departments for capital projects.

This HVAC Mechanic I position reports to facilities management and is responsible for the diagnosis, maintenance, installation, and repair of various HVAC, heating, and filtering equipment to ensure optimal system performance. The role requires experience with chillers, package systems, split systems, and other climate control equipment. While typically working a regular schedule (Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM), the position requires on-call availability for emergency repairs and coverage during critical times like extreme weather or major campus events. This is considered an essential position.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Minimum of 7-years of relevant experience including a minimum of 4-years of experience as a licensed HVAC technician
• Must be able to perform minor plumbing and electrical work (as allowed by code).
• Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints
• Must have working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment, BAS systems (JCI and Schneider helpful), and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (MAXIMO helpful)
• Must have effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
• Must possess solid time management and organizational skills, work well under pressure and juggle multiple tasks effectively, prioritizing competing requirements
• Must be able to work professionally and tactfully with fellow employees, faculty, students and staff; deal with difficult people and / or stressful scenarios
• Must maintain a professional appearance at all times and adhere to the University’s uniform policy
• Must be physically able to meet all job requirements
• Solid time management skills including the ability to multi-task, tactfully deal with unforeseen challenges and people and work well in a team setting with other technicians and trades professionals
• Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped space, during inclement weather year round
• Successful completion of CORI/SORI background and driving background checks.
• Certification in EPA/DEP Universal CFC reclamation
• Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License
• Valid US driver's license

Responsibilities

• Installs, repairs, adjusts, maintains, and troubleshoots all heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems, including but not limited to: Building Automation System (BAS) (Johnson Controls Metasys & Schneider Electric), refrigerant controls, chiller systems and controls, hermetic compressors, heat pumps, split systems, packaged units, duct or ductless splits, electric motors, electric motor controls, commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, water pumps, intake and exhaust fans, unit heaters, economizers, humidifiers & dehumidifiers.
• Creates and maintains timely and accurate asset preventive maintenance and condition records pertaining to HVAC systems, equipment, and components utilizing the university’s continuous maintenance management system (CMMS).
• Recommends and procures spare parts for replacement as necessary.
• Understands and adheres to all university operating procedures regarding resource use, time tracking, and logging of maintenance and repair activities.
• Responsible for the daily preparation of parts and tools for daily activities.
• Completes work in a timely and workmanlike manner.
• Coordinates work functions with fellow workers.
• Coordinates with assigned manager for the use of non-stock University tools and ensures their timely return.
• Participates in University-wide internal training/meetings as required.
• Attends approved Johnson Controls Metasys classes and/or training, or other vendor training approved by managers.
• Maintains and safeguards university tools professionally.
• Maintains equipment manuals and repair records.
• Maintains an "in house" inventory of parts for emergency/off-hour repairs.
• Responds to on-call and overtime requirements as needed.
• Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
