About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking an HVAC Mechanic I to perform journey-level work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated equipment. This role involves maintaining refrigeration units, control systems, and ductwork. The position reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III and may involve training new mechanics or supervising helpers. The role requires working with limited supervision on moderate to complex repair activities, including troubleshooting and repairing chiller electrical control circuits, overhauling compressors, and calibrating control systems. Preventive maintenance on air-conditioning and air handling equipment is also a key responsibility. The position is located at Harnett Correctional Institution in Lillington, North Carolina.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution, and control systems.
  • Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the full range of journey work duties associated with the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms.
  • Maintain refrigeration units and their control systems.
  • Identify the cause of problems, determine necessary materials and tools, and carry out repair procedures independently.
  • Train new mechanics or supervise the work of helpers.
  • Address moderate to complex repair activities with limited supervision.
  • Troubleshoot and repair chiller electrical control circuits.
  • Overhaul small reciprocal compressors independently and larger compressors under technical supervision.
  • Calibrate electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems.
  • Troubleshoot control circuits and replace faulty thermostats, wiring, and control devices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on air-conditioning and air handling equipment.
  • Log operational characteristics of chillers according to a preset schedule.
  • Install air-conditioning units.
  • Build and install ductwork and chilled water piping.
  • Adjust chillers and balance distribution systems for maximum energy efficiency.
  • Remove and replace joints or lengths of pipe in chilled water distribution systems.
  • Assist in troubleshooting/repairing fire alarm systems.
