About The Position

The Richmond County Schools’ HVAC Mechanic I, under the authority of the director of construction, maintenance, and planning, is responsible for performing the full range of duties associated with installation, maintenance, repair of ventilation, air conditioning and environmental control systems.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and two years previous experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, air conditioning, and environmental control systems is required.
  • Knowledge of heating, ventilation, and refrigeration theory.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of ventilation, air conditioning, and environment control equipment.
  • Knowledge of electricity and low voltage controls.
  • Knowledge of the design and operation of reciprocal and scroll compressors
  • Knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic control systems
  • Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures
  • Ability to follow specific written and oral instructions
  • Ability to use recycle and recovery equipment
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment utilized in the repair of ventilation, air conditioning, and environmental control equipment including brazing and silver solder.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on boilers preferred.
  • Technical school training for HVAC equipment and EPA certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of energy management systems (preferred).
  • Qualified applicant will hold a state issued heating and/or air conditioning license or applicant must be willing to attend necessary training and take required exam to obtain a license.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains HVAC equipment systems.
  • Conducts both minor and major repairs on boilers, heat pumps, furnaces, chillers, packaged air conditioning units, compressors, and exhaust fans.
  • Performs periodic maintenance on HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Conducts monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual preventive maintenance programs, places all equipment and systems on preventive maintenance schedules; executes not only preventive maintenance activities recommended by equipment vendors, but also those determined to be necessary by Richmond County Schools’ Maintenance Department to extend the useful life of equipment and systems.
  • Procures replacement parts/supplies required to complete work orders.
  • Prepares and maintains records to document work orders completed, preventive maintenance accomplished, repairs performed, parts replaced, and refrigerants used.
  • Performs other HVAC functions.
  • Plans and assists with HVAC installations; checks operating status of computerized energy management systems; maintains temperatures within the schools and facilities in accordance with prescribed conditions.
  • Subject to being on-call after normal working hours and on weekends.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the HVAC supervisor and/or the director of construction, maintenance, and planning.
