About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking an HVAC Mechanic I to perform journey-level work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated equipment. This role involves diagnosing and repairing refrigeration units, control systems, chiller electrical control circuits, and compressors. The position also includes performing preventive maintenance, installing ductwork and piping, and assisting with fire alarm system repairs. The HVAC Mechanic I will work with limited supervision on moderate to complex repair activities and may train new mechanics or supervise helpers.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems.
  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the full range of journey work duties associated with the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms.
  • Maintain refrigeration units and their control systems.
  • Identify the cause of problems, determine necessary materials and tools, and carry out repair procedures independently.
  • Train new mechanics or supervise the work of helpers.
  • Work with limited supervision while addressing moderate to complex repair activities.
  • Use electrical test devices, troubleshoot and repair chiller electrical control circuits.
  • Overhaul small reciprocal compressors independently and larger reciprocal, absorption, and centrifugal compressors under technical supervision.
  • Check for accuracy and calibrate electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems.
  • Troubleshoot control circuits and replace faulty thermostats, wiring, and control devices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on air-conditioning and air handling equipment.
  • Log operational characteristics of chillers according to preset schedules.
  • Install air-conditioning units.
  • Build and install ductwork and chilled water piping.
  • Adjust chillers and balance distribution systems to achieve maximum energy efficiency.
  • Remove and replace joints or lengths of pipe in chilled water distribution systems.
  • Assist in troubleshooting/repairing fire alarm systems.
