About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking an HVAC Mechanic I to perform journey-level work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated equipment. This role involves diagnosing and repairing refrigeration units, control systems, and associated components. The position reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III and may involve training new mechanics or supervising helpers. The role requires working with limited supervision on moderate to complex repair activities, including electrical control circuits, compressors, and pneumatic/electronic control systems. Preventive maintenance, installation of air-conditioning units, ductwork, and chilled water piping are also key responsibilities. The position may also assist with troubleshooting and repairing the fire alarm system.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems.
  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

Responsibilities

  • Performing the full range of journey work duties associated with the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms.
  • Maintaining refrigeration units and their control systems.
  • Identifying the cause of problems, determining necessary materials and tools, and carrying out repair procedures independently.
  • Training new mechanics or supervising the work of helpers.
  • Working with limited supervision while addressing moderate to complex repair activities.
  • Using electrical test devices, troubleshooting and repairing chiller electrical control circuits.
  • Overhauling small reciprocal compressors independently and larger compressors under technical supervision.
  • Checking for accuracy and calibrating electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems.
  • Troubleshooting control circuits and replacing faulty thermostats, wiring, and control devices.
  • Performing preventive maintenance on air-conditioning and air handling equipment.
  • Logging operational characteristics of chillers according to a preset schedule.
  • Installing air-conditioning units.
  • Building and installing ductwork and chilled water piping.
  • Adjusting chillers and balancing distribution systems to achieve maximum energy efficiency.
  • Removing and replacing joints or lengths of pipe in chilled water distribution systems.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting/repairing fire alarm system.
