HVAC Mechanic I - Nash Correctional Institution
About The Position
Reporting to the HVAC Supervisor at a medium custody male correctional facility, this position is primarily responsible for providing journey-level work in the areas of Heating/Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Hot Water Supply, and also Plumbing and Food Service Equipment. The role involves performing construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms, as well as maintaining refrigeration units and their control systems. Responsibilities include receiving work assignments via work orders, identifying problems, determining necessary materials and methods for repair, and independently carrying out repair procedures. More complex jobs may be reviewed by a technical supervisor to ensure proper work methods and quality. The position may also involve training new mechanics and supervising the work of offenders.
Requirements
- High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver’s license

- Documented experience in HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) Systems.
Responsibilities
- Performing construction, maintenance, and the repair of air-conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms.
- Maintaining refrigeration units and their control systems.
- Receiving work assignments generally in the form of work orders indicating the nature of the problem.
- Identifying the cause of the problem, determining materials and tools, needed and method of repair, and carrying out repair procedures independently on most jobs.
- Executing larger, costlier, exceptional, and/or more complex jobs that may be reviewed by a technical supervisor to determine extent of malfunction, to assure that proper work methods are being followed and that work is of acceptable quality.
- Training new mechanics and/or supervising the work of offenders.
