About The Position

Centrally located in the heart of Iowa, Ames is a vibrant, progressive community with more than 66,000 residents providing an excellent quality of life. Under the supervision of the Assistant City Manager, the Human Services Manager will serve as the primary staff, representing the City of Ames, on the Analysis on Social Services Evaluation Team (ASSET). The Human Services Manager will also convene and lead community discussions around human services as needed. This position is an ongoing, part-time, less than 20 hours per week position that is not benefit or paid leave eligible.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Bachelor's degree in public administration, public policy, public affairs, political science or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience in a city government is required.
  • This experience must consist of analysis, administration, or project management.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in public administration, public policy, public affairs, political science or a related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Analysis on Social Services Evaluation Team
  • Experience convening local service providers around human services efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the City’s staff member on the Analysis on Social Services Evaluation Team, ensuring collaboration with other ASSET Funders to accomplish the goals of ASSET.
  • Attend and represent the City of Ames at ASSET Board meetings, ASSET Administrative meetings, and any other related meetings pertaining to human services. Meetings may be held during the day, evening hours, and weekends.
  • Manage documentation, correspondence, notification, and planning activities around human services as directed by the Assistant City Manager; Represents the Assistant City Manager in interactions with elected and appointed state and local government officials, business owners and managers, neighborhood groups, employees, and other citizens and customers.
  • Responds to written and verbal citizen complaints, inquiries, and requests for service.
  • As assigned, arrange and coordinate internal and public meetings around human services, providing administrative support as needed.
  • Maintain contact and relationships with local agencies provide direct human services.
  • Conduct research or analysis for special projects as directed by the Assistant City Manager or his/her designee.
  • The Human Services Manager must have flexible hours of availability to meet the needs of the public which includes short, long and/or irregular hours.
