About The Position

The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission is seeking a motivated HR Assistant to support key human resources functions that keep our agency running smoothly. From payroll processing to employee engagement and recognition, this position plays a meaningful role in shaping the employee experience. This position is permanent part-time (12 hours per week or 24 hours per pay period). Ideal schedule will be three 4-hour shifts each week during core business hours.

Requirements

  • One year of coursework or training in personnel management, business administration, public administration or office/administrative or two years of related experience.
  • This job requires regular, reliable onsite attendance.
  • NRGC employees are prohibited from gambling or placing a wager in any establishment licensed by the Commission.
  • Knowledge of HR and/or payroll processes (preferred but trainable).
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer-focused approach when interacting with employees.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet established deadlines.
  • Comfortable using common office technology, including email, Microsoft Office, and HRIS platforms.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule to support department coverage and office events.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of HR and/or payroll processes (preferred but trainable).

Responsibilities

  • Processes biweekly and monthly payroll, including new hire entry, adjustments/corrections, leave tracking, and separation payouts.
  • Provides general employee support and answers HR-related questions when the HR Manager is out of office.
  • Administers employee engagement programs, including leading committee meetings, and preparing newsletters, bulletin boards, employee spotlights, and event planning.
  • Coordinates employee recognition activities such as birthday and anniversary notices, achievement certificates, and swag purchasing, distribution, and inventory management.
  • Runs HR-related reports, audits HRIS data, and maintains HR files in accordance with State records retention schedules.
  • Supports agency-wide initiatives such as the annual food drive and other state-sponsored programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the job classification scope.
