About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a Head Boys Wrestling Coach for F.L. Schlagle High School. This role is responsible for all levels and phases of the sport, ensuring all duties are completed correctly and on schedule. The coach must enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) and supervise student athletes during all activities to ensure a safe environment. Record-keeping, eligibility verification, and facility supervision are key components of this position. The coach will also develop practice regimes, oversee coaching personnel, monitor student academic eligibility, and manage team communications.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Current certification in CPR and AED.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.) to ensure a safe environment with minimal risk of injury.
  • Maintain a variety of records for compliance with district, athletic conference, state, and KSHSAA requirements (e.g., physical exams, concussion forms, insurance waivers, consent forms, emergency contacts, schedules, equipment inventory, statistics, rosters).
  • Verify that all necessary forms and eligibility requirements are met before students are issued equipment or allowed to practice.
  • Implement practice schedules and other related schedules (e.g., facility usage, staff assignments), ensuring efficient program operation.
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain locker room security.
  • Report all injuries of participants to proper school officials according to policy.
  • Support and follow the recommendations of athletic trainers regarding student safety, injury, and participation.
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain an accurate inventory, enforce rules regarding equipment care, and ensure accountability at the end of each season.
  • Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance.
  • Conduct evaluations of student athletes for feedback on performance and team placement.
  • Organize and attend supporting activities such as league meetings, coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets.
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance performance.
  • Evaluate facilities and playing fields for potential hazards and recommend modifications.
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, providing direction, guidance, and mentoring.
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare written evaluations for each coach.
  • Advise coaching staff, parents, and athletes on expectations of good sportsmanship and the importance of KSHSAA rules.
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility and provide appropriate intervention (counseling, tutoring) to maintain eligibility.
  • Report all team scores to appropriate media outlets and prepare other public information releases.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.
