About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a Head Boys Soccer Coach for F.L. Schlagle High School for the 2026-2027 school year. This role is responsible for all levels and all phases of the sport, ensuring that duties are completed correctly and on schedule. The coach will enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) and supervise student athletes during all facets of participation to ensure a safe environment and adherence to district policies. Responsibilities include maintaining records, verifying eligibility, implementing schedules, supervising practices and locker rooms, reporting injuries, organizing equipment, evaluating student athletes, developing training regimes, assessing facilities for hazards, overseeing coaching personnel, and monitoring student academic eligibility. The position also involves communicating with school personnel and parents, utilizing technology effectively, and applying knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program. The coach will also be responsible for reporting team scores to media outlets and preparing public information releases.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check
  • Current certification in CPR and AED
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community
  • Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.)
  • Maintain a variety of records (e.g., physical exam forms, concussion forms, insurance waivers, medical releases, activity consent forms, tryout/participation agreements, emergency contact information, schedules, equipment inventory, game/student athlete statistics, squad roster)
  • Verify that no candidate is issued equipment or allowed to practice until all required forms are completed and eligibility requirements are met
  • Ensure all transfer students have met KSHSAA eligibility requirements prior to participation
  • Ensure all participating students have purchased the required activity ticket
  • Implement practice schedules and other schedules (e.g., facility usage, equipment usage, staff assignments)
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain security of the locker room
  • Report all injuries of participants to proper school officials and follow injury reporting policy
  • Support and follow all athletic trainers and their recommendations
  • Support and conform to established decisions and policy decisions of the school and USD 500
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain an accurate inventory of all equipment, enforce rules regarding care of equipment, and ensure accountability at the conclusion of each season
  • Inform administration of equipment needs
  • Maintain records of evaluation procedures and assess student athletes for feedback and team placement
  • Conduct and attend a variety of supporting activities (e.g., league meetings, coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, banquets)
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes (e.g., strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention)
  • Evaluate facility and/or playing field for potential hazards and inadequate equipment
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, providing direction and monitoring activities
  • Guide coaching personnel in instructional techniques, organization of practices, and supervision guidelines
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare written evaluations for each coach
  • Advise coaching personnel, parents, and athletes of expectations of good sportsmanship
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility and provide appropriate intervention (e.g., counseling, tutoring)
  • Report all team scores to the appropriate media outlets and prepare other public information releases as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director
