About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a Head Baseball Coach for F.L. Schlagle High School. This role is responsible for all levels and phases of the baseball sport, ensuring that duties are carried out correctly and on schedule. The coach will enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA), supervise student athletes during all facets of participation to ensure safety and adherence to district policies, and maintain various records for compliance with district, conference, and state requirements. This includes verifying eligibility, managing schedules, supervising practices, and overseeing equipment and uniform distribution. The coach will also develop training regimes, evaluate facilities for hazards, guide coaching personnel, and monitor student-athlete academic eligibility, providing intervention as needed. For high school positions, the coach will report team scores to media outlets and prepare public information releases. Other duties may be assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Current certification in CPR and AED.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices, etc.) to ensure safety and adherence to district mission and policies.
  • Maintain a variety of records for compliance with district, athletic conference, state, and KSHSAA requirements (e.g., physical exams, concussion forms, insurance waivers, consent forms, schedules, equipment inventory, statistics, rosters).
  • Verify that all necessary forms and certifications are completed before equipment is issued or practice begins.
  • Ensure all transfer students meet KSHSAA eligibility requirements prior to participation.
  • Ensure all participating students have purchased the required activity ticket.
  • Implement and manage practice schedules, facility usage, equipment usage, and staff assignments, submitting schedules to administration.
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain security of the locker room.
  • Report all injuries of participants to proper school officials according to policy.
  • Support and follow the recommendations of athletic trainers regarding student safety, injury, and participation.
  • Support and conform to established decisions and policy decisions of the school and USD 500.
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain accurate equipment inventory, enforce rules regarding equipment care, and ensure accountability at the conclusion of each season.
  • Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance.
  • Maintain records of evaluation procedures and assess student athletes for feedback and team placement.
  • Conduct and attend supporting activities (league meetings, coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to provide program information and recognize accomplishments.
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance performance.
  • Evaluate facility and/or playing field for potential hazards and recommend modifications.
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, providing direction and monitoring activities.
  • Guide coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision.
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare written evaluations for each coach.
  • Advise coaching staff, parents, and athletes on expectations of good sportsmanship and the importance of KSHSAA Rule 52.
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility in compliance with KSHSAA and USD 500 policies.
  • Provide appropriate intervention (counseling, tutoring) to students needing assistance to maintain academic eligibility.
  • Report all team scores to appropriate media outlets and prepare other public information releases as needed (High School Only).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.
