About The Position

RainCity Housing is an organization that makes a difference in people’s lives. Our mission is to advance social equity by building upon the strengths of our community and of each individual. With a goal of providing a home for everyone, RainCity’s programs sustain relationships, strengthen communities, and make change for people experiencing homelessness, mental health, trauma, and substance use issues. RainCity Housing has been developing emerging and promising practices for over 40 years in social services and healthcare, providing Housing First, harm reduction and supports for community members who access our services.

Requirements

  • A post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Minimum of 5 years of occupational health and safety experience, preferably in a large, complex social services organization.
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience is required, and ability to motivate and develop a team through mentorship and coaching.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and your own vehicle.
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Office.
  • Ability to understand, communicate, and support the mission and values of RainCity Housing, and the models/methods of supporting clients including the principles of Housing First and Harm Reduction.
  • Understanding, interpretation, explanation, and application of relevant legislation, law, regulation, and court decisions.
  • Ability to continually analyze and evaluate health and safety data to create innovative best practices.
  • Demonstrated anti-racism knowledge and skills to support racialized communities, including knowledge of Canada’s historical and on-going colonialism.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills; can consult effectively with leadership to develop solutions to moderately complex organizational health and safety issues.
  • Effective decision-maker; able to assess situations to determine importance, urgency, and risks.
  • Demonstrated training and facilitation skills.
  • Champions positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and manages occupational health & safety initiatives, programs, and procedures in consultation with HR Director and Operations to meet regulatory obligations and enhance the health & safety of staff, clients, visitors and contractors at all our sites.
  • Provides direct supervision, leadership, and coaching to the Wellness and Leave Coordinator, ensuring effective management of occupational and non-occupational leave cases, return-to-work plans, and wellness programming.
  • Provides strategic guidance, and data analysis to the Senior Leadership Team and Operations Managers in the interpretation of laws, regulations, standards, and policies to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation, Workers Compensation Act and collective agreements.
  • Approaches health and safety with anti-discrimination knowledge and a trauma-informed lens to support equity-seeking groups, including Indigenous peoples, Black people, two-spirit, trans, and gender diverse people, people who use drugs and alcohol, people living with mental health issues, and sex workers. Balances between the need to comply with colonial systems and the ability to provide culturally relevant workplace health and safety.
  • Guides team members, leaders, safety committee members, first aid attendants and employees in the implementation of health and safety initiatives, policies and practices. Promotes a safety culture throughout the organization through communication, training effective decision making and the promotion of best practices.
  • Implements, monitors, and maintains functioning Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees at each worksite; advises committees for compliance.
  • Acts as representatives with WorkSafeBC Prevention Officers and responds to WorkSafeBC inquiries and inspections reports in consultation with management.
  • Implements, monitors, and maintains the violence prevention program. Oversees the completion of Violence Risk Assessments, Training, and Critical Incident Reports.
  • Conducts inspections, assessments and audits, Ensures appropriate and timely incident reporting, investigations and risk assessments.
  • Collects health and safety data through reports, site visits, and audits. Monitors and reports on key performance indicators and recommendations to senior leaderships. Stays current on industry trends and practices.
  • Develops and coordinates organizational health and safety training for staff and managers on occupational health and safety awareness, policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and best practices. Identifies and leverages external training resources, including programs offered through the Community Social Services Health and Safety Association (CSSHSA), to support organizational training needs and ensure the organization benefits from established sector resources and best practices.
  • Coordinates and promotes available training opportunities such as OHS for Leaders, Join Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) training, incident investigation training, and other sector-based safety education programs.
  • Cultivates positive relations with regulators, and external agencies to achieve safety goals, integrate with other programs, and promotes health and safety. Embodies RainCity’s value models and represents its best interests when interchanging with third parties.
