Requirements

  • Associate degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related human services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicants for positions designated as Juvenile Justice Officers are subject to and must meet the hiring and training standards established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, as defined in Title 12, Chapter 9 of the NC Administrative Code, by the statutory authority of GS 17C.
  • Selected applicant must attend and successfully complete and pass the Juvenile Justice Officer Basic Training certification program.
  • Pass a Criminal Background check
  • Pass a Drug Screening test
  • Pass a Psychological test
  • Pass a Sexual Risk Screening test
  • Pass a Physical (to include Vision and Hearing)
  • Be a US citizen
  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Have a valid driver's license

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience of individual and group behavior.
  • Demonstrated experience with crisis intervention counseling approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with staff at all levels to provide expectations that align with agency core values.
  • Demonstrated experience working with minority group cultures.
  • Physically capable of applying the proper methods and procedures to physically restrain juveniles and defend self after being properly trained by the department.

Responsibilities

  • Provide for the overall safety and security of youth, staff, and facility during third shift.
  • Serve as a supervisor for all third shift youth monitors in planning and prepares a schedule for staff coverage and supervision in living units.
  • Monitor activities assigned to the shift assuring that all duties are performed as required.
  • Visit individual living units regularly.
  • Provide staff support and coverage.
  • Provide crisis intervention if necessary.
  • Respond to incoming visitors and telephone calls and notify appropriate staff in case of emergency.
  • Conduct nightly shift review.
  • Update staff about problems, and policies and procedures.
  • Provide mini training sessions.
  • Review and approve all written assignments completed by third shift youth monitors.
  • Prepare written reports and update incoming Supervisors of third shift events.
