About The Position

The Housing Navigator facilitates successful reentry into the community by ensuring participants have access to safe, affordable housing after incarceration. The Housing Navigator works with individuals who are chronically homeless and/or those at risk of becoming homeless. Knowledge of Public Housing Authority and Housing subsidies are ideal (i.e., Housing Choice Vouchers, Shelter Plus Care, Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH), permanent supportive housing, affordable and market rate housing, and other housing opportunities). The Housing Navigator assists clients with housing applications, completes supportive and subsidized housing paperwork, surveys rental market for affordable housing, advocates for clients with prospective landlords. Provides individualized client support by assessing housing needs, helps to develop discharge plans that address their barriers and connects participants to permanent housing options. The Housing Navigator conducts outreach in the community routinely including daily, weekly, monthly and participates in community events throughout the program area to establish access to housing options. Works to recruit landlords and establishes working relationships for the benefit of clientele. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possess an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree from a granting institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools (WASC), or equivalent, and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a similar position; or A minimum of two (2) years of experience dealing with property management or coordination of housing.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge of Public Housing Authority, Housing subsidies, and other housing opportunities in the community.
  • Familiar with the correctional system and current correctional policies.
  • Know and comply with program documentation requirements, applicable ethical and professional standards of conduct.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as government regulations, legal documents, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to conduct individual counseling sessions and interface with outside agencies.
  • Ability to work independently to locate and collaborate with landlords, subsidized housing, and other housing resources in the community.
  • Able to operate a PC and demonstrate excellent computer skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, with specific expertise in MS Word, Excel, and Access.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Sciences or related field and one (1) year experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy services to an offender population, supervisory experience with case managers or substance abuse counselors is preferred.
