About The Position

This role is critical in the work to end homelessness and will be joining a passionate team focused on system improvement and client wellbeing. The Housing and Diversion Specialist is a front-line member of the Wake County CoC Coordinated Entry Team who helps people access homeless resources by providing triage, assessments, and Coordinated Entry support through a variety of virtual and in‑person methods. This role focuses on housing problem-solving, completing CE enrollments and assessments, and placing households on the Community Queue, a prioritized list used to match people to available shelter and housing programs within HMIS. The position provides light‑touch case management, immediate day services, and referrals to drop‑in centers, shelters, and street outreach, while using housing problem-solving strategies, including flexible financial assistance when appropriate, to help resolve homelessness quickly and safely. As part of the Coordinated Entry Team, the Specialist works closely with By‑Name List Coordinators, the HMIS Team, and community partners. They will operate in a "hybrid and multi‑location environment" and may require occasional after‑hour flexibility to meet client and system needs. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • No specific experience required
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversion strategies and housing-focused best practices
  • Comfort with public speaking, stakeholder engagement, and meeting facilitation
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, officials and the public
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively and empathetically with clients, providers, and community partners
  • Ability to analyze and manage large datasets, ensuring data accuracy and informed decision-making for housing placements
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with HUD CoC, HMIS and CE policies and procedures
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Administration, Human Services, or a related field
  • Three (3) years or more of job-related experience including work as a case manager, intake specialist or care coordination
  • Experience facilitating case conferencing meetings, collaborating with providers to track client progress and ensure timely housing placements
  • Experience working with HUD funded programs, including but not limited to Continuum of Care and/or Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) for documentation, reporting, and communication
  • Multilingual skills, with Spanish strongly preferred, to support language access and effective communication with diverse households
