About The Position

Provide in-office assistance to GARs (Government Assisted Refugees) staying in temporary accommodation (Welcome Centre or commercial) in their search for long-term rental housing within Metro Vancouver.

Requirements

  • Diploma in social services or other related field and Minimum of one (1) year recent, related experience in settlement services, OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Fluency in a second language, particularly Rohingyan.
  • Demonstrated effective communication in both written and oral English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral English at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure and time constraints and to deal with high-need clients and urgent situations.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to working effectively with diverse populations.
  • Possession of and the ability to maintain a clear provincial Criminal Record Check.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and monitor the search for housing of all GAR units (family) during their initial stay in temporary accommodation (Welcome Centre or commercial).
  • Keep Welcome Centre or Temporary Accommodations Coordinator and RAP Case Manager informed of “housing search status” of GAR units.
  • Inform Manager, RAP Accommodations of any issues with the housing search which might result in longer stays in temporary accommodations (target is 21 days).
  • Provide general information on Greater Vancouver rental market to GAR clients during temporary accommodation (Welcome Centre or commercial) through group orientations, and individualized assistance, based on clients’ preferences, budget, and special needs.
  • Provide a minimum of one housing option to GAR clients who need support in finding housing.
  • Makes initial contact with landlord/building manager to get appropriate information (rental cost, superficies, etc.) and arranges for a visit.
  • Accompany GAR clients on housing visits as needed or arrange for a volunteer to accompany the client.
  • Liaise with landlords and building managers to facilitate renting opportunities for future clients.
  • Assist clients in ordering furniture and household goods, including delivery to clients’ new permanent address and follow-up on delivery related issues.
  • Order utilities, such as phone/cable/internet packages, gas and hydro, based on clients’ needs and preferences.
  • Prepare and submit required IRCC forms (e.g. rental information form) and applications to BC Housing.
  • Enter all data into NewTrack in a timely manner.
  • Position is anticipated to deliver services in-person at an ISSofBC office or designated temporary accommodation locations (e.g. hotels).
  • Performs other related duties as required.
